Book There s Hope for the World

Download or read book There s Hope for the World written by Richard Arrington and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2008-10-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a sultry September morning in 1955, a young African American man, the son of share corppers, boarded a Greyhound bus in Birmingham, Alabama, to leave his home state for the first time in his life. He was headed for the University of Detroit on a teaching scholarship from Miles College. Richard Arrington could not have guessed then that his future as a teacher would be postponed for decades by big-city politics--and that he would serve a record-setting five terms as chief executive of Alabama’s largest city. Under Arrington’s leadership, Birmingham rebuilt itself from a foundering, steel-driven industrial center to one of the most diversified metropolitan areas in the Southeast, with an economy fueled by health care, biomedical research, engineering, telecommunications, and banking. As mayor, Arrington’s economic legacy is impressive. When he left office, Birmingham boasted a record number of jobs and the lowest unemployment rate in its history. Additionally, Birmingham had built the strongest tax base in Alabama, expanded its city limits by 60 square miles, reduced crime to its lowest level in 25 years, and funded a $260 million school construction program. Today Birmingham is financially sound and is the only city in the Southeast with a $100 million endowment fund.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Burke, former Archbishop of St. Louis, and Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, is now the chaplain of the Order of Malta and a great friend of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In a thorough and hard-hitting discussion with Guillaume d'Alançon, episcopal delegate for the family and for life issues of a French diocese, he offers his thoughts frankly and without concern for political correctness on the pressing questions of today: the Church, the Liturgy, spiritual renewal, the family, marriage, openness to children and respect for life. Every theme is approached from the perspective of deep Faith, effectively and without polemics. Cardinal Burke, a great canonist, with long pastoral experience, treats with clarity and directness these often difficult subjects. This is a lucid, straight forward and important discussion for the understanding the essential moral and spiritual challenges of today, and the deep roots of the natural law, which is written on our hearts. "Jesus, the Son, is the door situated between the Father and Christian souls. There is no other. Jesus is the door through which the praises and sacrifices of souls ascend to the Father, and through which choice graces and the fruits of the infinite merits of the God-man descend upon the world. Let us turn our attention to the lock of this door, namely the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In order to open the door, we must strive to know the secrets of this divine heart, which has loved mankind so much." - Cardinal Raymond Burke

Storm De Wees the owner of the ship claimed Adelphi as his own. He warned the residents if they got in his way they would suffer. Some of the former military personnel that found themselves stuck on this world gladly joined De Wees. They willingly shared all they knew of the residents and the world. Putting everyone in danger. Book The God of Hope and the End of the World

Download or read book The God of Hope and the End of the World written by John Polkinghorne and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we live in a world that makes sense, not just now, but totally and forever? If, as scientists now predict, the universe is going to end in collapse or decay, can it really be a divine creation? Is there a credible hope of a destiny beyond death? In this engaging and intellectually scrupulous book, a leading scientist-theologian draws on ideas from science, scripture, and theology to address these important questions. John Polkinghorne carefully builds a structure of the hope of the life to come that involves both continuity and discontinuity with life in this world—enough continuity so that it is we ourselves who shall live again in that future world and enough discontinuity to ensure that the second story is not just a repetition of the first. Polkinghorne develops his argument in three sections. In the first, he considers the role of contemporary scientific insights and cultural expectations. In the second, he gives a careful account of the various testimonies of hope to be found in the Bible and assesses the credibility of belief in Jesus’ resurrection. In the final section he critically analyzes and defends the Christian hope of the life of the new creation.

Book Finding Hope in This World of Turmoil

Download or read book Finding Hope in This World of Turmoil written by Trevor Bartley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurrection message is the most important part of our belief system. Without the truth of the resurrection message, our faith is just another religion with no real substance. The Resurrection sets Christianity apart. This book is dedicated to establishing this truth. The extent of the work of Christs resurrection is staggering. However, if there is one topic that is the central message of the Bible, it is the sacrifice of Christ. The Old Testament looks forward to it, whereas the New Testament looks back at it. We must be extremely careful not to allow these two ordinances to become routine in our Christian life (communion and baptism) and thereby reduce the significance of what Jesus did for us at his sacrifice and resurrection. The greatest gift that anyone can be given is eternal life, and the one that made that possible is Jesus. In Christ, we have victory, provided we see ourselves dead to sin and raised together with him. Even so consider yourselves also dead to sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11, AMP). I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me. [Therefore, I do not treat Gods gracious gift as something of minor importance and defeat its very purpose]; I do not set aside and invalidate and frustrate and nullify the grace (unmerited favor) of God. For if justification (righteousness, acquittal from guilt) comes through [observing the ritual of] the Law, then Christ (the Messiah) died groundlessly and to no purpose and in vain. [His death was then wholly superfluous.] (Galatians 2:2021, AMP). We need to remember that the story doesnt end with Jesuss death. He is currently in heaven, in his resurrected body, and one day, he will return. The resurrection of Jesus was an act of the supreme love of God. Remember, our identification is in who we are in Christ and his resurrection. The Bible tells us in John 14:12 that the things Christ has done we can do, and greater than these we will do because he goes to the Father. The resurrection demonstrated Jesuss victory over the power of death and confirms there is life beyond the grave. Jesus Christ offers us a resurrection power beyond ourselves that can make us alive; it empowers us to overcome the limitations of this realm with an infused ability as we focus on the Spirit of power working within us. I hope you receive much insight and revelation as you discover the wholeness of what Jesus achieved for you and me.
