Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boston, 1919. It’s been a terrible year for thirteen-year-old Joshua Harper. The influenza pandemic that’s sweeping the world has claimed his father’s life; his voice has changed, so he can’t sing in the Boston Boys’ Choir anymore; and now money is tight, so he must quit school to get a job. It’s not fair! Joshua begins working as a newspaper boy, hawking papers on the street, but he soon finds himself competing with Charlestown Charlie, a tough, streetwise boy who does not make things easier for Joshua. It seems that fitting in is not as easy as it once was. Then disaster strikes the city of Boston. Joshua must do what he can to help, and in doing so he finds the place—and the voice—that he thought he’d lost. This remarkable novel is fast-paced, suspenseful, and based on true incidents in Boston history.

Book We Were Eight Years in Power

Download or read book We Were Eight Years in Power written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and published by One World. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “urgently relevant”* collection featuring the landmark essay “The Case for Reparations,” the National Book Award–winning author of Between the World and Me “reflects on race, Barack Obama’s presidency and its jarring aftermath”*—including the election of Donald Trump. New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Named One of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times • USA Today • Time • Los Angeles Times • San Francisco Chronicle • Essence • O: The Oprah Magazine • The Week • Kirkus Reviews *Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In this sweeping collection of new and selected essays, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s “first white president.” But the story of these present-day eight years is not just about presidential politics. This book also examines the new voices, ideas, and movements for justice that emerged over this period—and the effects of the persistent, haunting shadow of our nation’s old and unreconciled history. Coates powerfully examines the events of the Obama era from his intimate and revealing perspective—the point of view of a young writer who begins the journey in an unemployment office in Harlem and ends it in the Oval Office, interviewing a president. We Were Eight Years in Power features Coates’s iconic essays first published in The Atlantic, including “Fear of a Black President,” “The Case for Reparations,” and “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” along with eight fresh essays that revisit each year of the Obama administration through Coates’s own experiences, observations, and intellectual development, capped by a bracingly original assessment of the election that fully illuminated the tragedy of the Obama era. We Were Eight Years in Power is a vital account of modern America, from one of the definitive voices of this historic moment.

Book The Mark Twain Collection

Download or read book The Mark Twain Collection written by Mark Twain and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain's novels are filled with humor, wit, and astounding insight into the world of the 19th-century United States. Written entirely in the vernacular, these classic satirical tales exposed the bigotry and hypocrisy of American life. The cheerful Tom Sawyer, the goodnatured Huck Finn, the independent Hank Morgan, and the well-meaning Tom Canty are quintessential Twain characters, full of life, verve, and a sense of justice they often felt was missing from the world around them. Included in this collection are four of his greatest and most popular novels: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and The Prince and the Pauper. They are the perfect introduction to the work of one of America's foremost talents.

Book Philosophical Pragmatism

Download or read book Philosophical Pragmatism written by Robert Uda and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-03-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consolidates the common sense philosophy for the average person. This book documents how I think. It includes my views and opinions on things and events that I have experienced throughout life. You may agree or disagree with my views and opinions. That's okay. My objective has been to give you something to think about, particularly if you disagree with me. Maybe it will motivate you to document your own philosophy and prepare a similar book. Over the past 43 years of my educational pursuits, employment, business dealings, community service activities, religious activities, and marriage and family life, I have thought deeply about these areas of focus. As I dreamed, conceptualized, and mentally created original thoughts, I wrote them down in diaries/journals, notebooks, papers, and other documents. This book is a consolidation of all of these thoughts. It is my, an average man's, philosophy of life. I share this philosophy with you.
