Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-School and New-School Therapeutics To established therapeutic facts the profession clings as with the heart and hand of one man; clings with a despera tion and unanimity whose intensity is the measure of the unsatisfied desire for something fixed. Yet with what a babel of discordant voices does it celebrate its two thousand years 'of experience! Looking at the revolutions and contradictions of 'the past, listening to the therapeutic babel of the present, is it a wonder that men should take refuge in nihilism, and like the lotus-eaters, dream that all alike is folly, - that rest and quiet and calm are the only human fruition? Book Pharmacology and Therapeutics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pharmacology and Therapeutics Classic Reprint written by Reynold Webb Wilcox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States Pharmacopoeia, so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The eighth decennial revision of the Pharmacopoeia has given the many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two dis tinct parts, the first being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy, and this, the second, to Pharmacology and Thera peutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work the classification employed is based on'jtqie par ticular physiological systems upon which the various drugs or other agents principally act. There is a complete list of drugs and preparations, without special description, except as to dosage, and very elaborate accounts of their physiological action and therapeutics are given. In these descriptions the effort has been made to present the latest views of the highest authorities in these departments, and to render the book as practically use ful as possible by full details regarding treatment. The two works combined offer, it is believed, a very complete and up to - date presentation of the whole subject of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Book Rational Therapy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rational Therapy Classic Reprint written by Otto Lerch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Therapy As a teacher of graduates, I have been impressed with the dissatisfaction existing with the state of Therapeutics, which appears to most physicians chaotic. I have tried in this book to give a guide in the treatment of the sick by emphasizing that blood alone cures, and that all methods used to treat disease must serve to purify it, and bring it where it is needed. I have discussed the various therapeutic methods with this idea in View and have given the essentials of each, enough I believe, for immediate use, and to serve as an introduction to special works, which the book is not intended to replace. To accomplish this, each chapter had to be short, an outline only of the vast material it represents. This applies especially to the one on drugs, almost sketchy in character, yet like the others, contain ing the essentials of this method of treatment. It has been my aim to make this book useful for every day practice. The healing force of Nature has been explained in the Intro duction. The chapter on Fresh Air contains an outline of the treatment with Air Bath, Sun Bath and Climate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Philosophy of Therapeutics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Philosophy of Therapeutics Classic Reprint written by Eldridge C. Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophy of Therapeutics It is always expected that an author will give some reason for his work. My object in submitting this effort to the medical profession is because I believe such a work is needed. In what may be found herein all intention of hypercriticism of any special school of medicine is disclaimed. The author believes the time has come for an understanding between the various schools and sects in medicine; for the throwing down of all artificial and illogical barriers between thoughtful, scientific men who are really searching for truth. This does not mean that any school or sect should become subservient to or be absorbed to extinction by another; but it does mean that the medical profession as a whole should be too broad to allow petty theories and intolerance to separate brothers in a common cause. Of course I refer especially to the differences of views existing between the two chief divisions of the medical profession, the elder or "allopathic" school and the younger or "homoeopathic" school. Book The Principles of Therapeutics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Therapeutics Classic Reprint written by Oliver Thomas Osborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Therapeutics The physician must carefully study his patients, their symptoms, and the result of his treatment, and especially the results of medication. He must never confound his patient with the disease; it is the patient who has the disease that he is called upon to treat. Hence the therapist must individualize the man, woman or child who comes to him for treatment. Fred Shattuck, of Boston, once said, The surgeon's knife is in reality a confession of failure in so far as it is used for the relief of pathological surgery. We should go a step farther and still call it therapy when the physician decides that opera tive intervention is needed and is advisable. But the internist should not wholly release his patient to the Operating surgeon, but should control and manage his pre - operative, post-opera tive, and convalescent periods with, of course, consultation with the surgeon. Surgeons are often not alert to physiologic disturbances in their Operated cases, and hence do not properly manage such disturbances, and many a surgical patient gets well in spite of the post-operative treatment rather than on account Of it. Also, the operated patient is often a case to the skilled, busy operator; but it is a fact that proper medical care after the Operation will very many times prevent long, tedious convalescence, and may even prevent permanent invalidism. There can be no doubt that they have aroused a lively interest in an unjustly neglected but all-important branch of Medical Science; and that henceforth medical men will feel compelled to take into serious consideration the principles on which they proceed in the administration of medicines.
