Download or read book Adapted Physical Activity written by Gudrun Doll-Tepper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 21-24 June 1989 the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IF APA) held its 7th International Symposium "Adapted Physical Activity -An Interdisciplinary Approach" in Berlin (West). This was the first time that this symposium has been held in a German speaking country, and it presented unique challenges to the organizers. For example, neither the term nor the field of adapted physical activity was known in Germany before the symposium. Thus, at the outset, the organizers' task was to define the meaning of adapted physical activity as a concept and to identify areas and professionals associated with it. After lengthy and intense discussions we agreed on the following definition: Adapted physical activity refers to movement, physical activity, and sports in which special emphasis is placed on the interests and capabilities of individuals with limiting conditions, such as the disabled, health impaired or aged. Despite the fact that the use of an English term for a symposium in Germany would not be accepted by all German speaking professionals, it was decided to use this term because no translation appeared to be fully adequate. "Sports for the Disabled", "Modified Movement Activites", "Sport Therapy", or "Psychomotor Exercises" would have represented only single aspects of adapted physical activity and were thus incomplete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-standing tradition of excellence is extended in the Fourth Edition of this authoritative introduction to the field of therapeutic recreation. The authors effectively combine a broad orientation to the profession with the practical information necessary for students to become successful practitioners. Part I contains a comprehensive discussion of the fields history and theoretical underpinnings, providing students with the perspective they need to evaluate the social, cultural, demographic, economic, and technical forces that have shaped and are continuing to impact health and human services in general, and therapeutic recreation in particular. Part II introduces students to the client populations served by therapeutic recreation specialists and describes specific approaches and activities employed by TR professionals to help clients achieve meaningful improvements in health status, functional capacities, and quality of life. The authors have retained the practical, student-oriented approach that makes this an ideal text for introductory courses. They address all content areas included in the NCTRC certification exam, are compatible with the American Psychiatric Association on psychological classifications, and incorporate the World Health Organizations international classification of functioning, disability, and health. The latest edition contains updated information on baby boomers, the obesity epidemic, and evidence-based practices; field-based photographs and illustrations; and study questions and exercises designed to engage students.
