Special mention though is due Dr. Hermann Scheffler, as his "Theorie des Voutes" has been drawn upon for much of the theory in treating culverts and vaulted structures. The theory of the elastic arch for arch bridges of stone, concrete, brick, etc., is advocated here, as in the author's previous treatises. This theory, as a practical working theory, receives direct confirmation in the many experiments performed by the Austrian Society of Civil Engineers and Architects, in 1890-95, on arches of brick and concrete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Design of Reinforced Concrete Arches: A Treatise for Engineers and Technical Students Of all the problems in bridge designing the analysis of the elastic arch is by far the most difficult. The works which have heretofore appeared on this subject are either so mathematically abstruse, or leave so much to the reader to demonstrate for him self, that they are of little value to the practical engineer or to the technical student whose mathematical training has not been of exceptional order. The entire absence in technical literature of a work obviating these unfortunate features has been brought so forcibly to the attention of the author that he has felt justified in undertaking the present work. It was felt that the graphical method of analysis would be preferred by both engineers and technical students to the longer and more involved mathematical method of analysis. Every principle involved in the graphical treatment is ex plained thoroughly and in detail in the theoretical portion of the work. There are no missing steps in the necessary mathematical analysis of the theory as set forth in the present treatise. The author has in preparation a companion volume to the present one, which will treat of hinged arches and unsymmetrical arches. The author wishes to express his indebtedness to the classic work of Professor Henry T. Eddy, and to the works of Professor William Cain. The graphical treatment is shorter than that given in the author's Steel-concrete Arches, and the Résumé of Operations given should put the draftsman in com plete possession of the method. The alge braie solution that follows is especially recommended, however, as it enables the pressure line to be established to any de sirable degree of accuracy. In Chapter III an algebraic solution for a three-centered arch is given in great detail for a moving load in various posi tions, corresponding to maximum mo ments at critical sections. In Chapter IV temperature and allied stresses are found, and in Chapter V the method of single loads is developed and applied to a rein forced-concrete arch. The method being simple and easily followed, the hope is'ex pressed that this method of single loads may come into more favor than it has in the past. All arches have their own loci and tangent curves; the author found, in addition, that they have a property in common, namely, the area enclosed by the arch axis and the straight line joining its ends. All changes in the form of the arch can be expressed in terms of this characteristic. This led at once to the conclusion that the characteristic, or the elements expressed by it, viz., the intersection locus and the tangent curves, could be reduced to a standard, and that any changes in form could be reduced to factors which referred to this standard.
