Book Theory of Self Locking of Lasers with Inhomogeneously Broadened Lines

Download or read book Theory of Self Locking of Lasers with Inhomogeneously Broadened Lines written by R. J. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model is given to describe self-locking. The semi-classical theory of Lamb for laser action has been modified to include the collisional effects on linewidth and on the nonlinear polarization. The collisional effects were included by a classical atom-atom rate. The results modify Lamb's equation for the frequencies and phases of oscillating modes. The criterion of self-locking of modes is expressed in terms of ratio of loss to unsaturated gain. Comparisons of the theoretical results and published experimental results for He-Ne and He-Cd are satisfactory. (Author).

Book Mode locking and Mode Properties of Optical Lasers

Download or read book Mode locking and Mode Properties of Optical Lasers written by H. Statz and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains: Self-Locking in Modes in Lasers and phase-locking effects between longitudinal modes in lasers. The expected phases of oscillating modes depend in a complicated manner upon the relaxation times T1 and T2 of the medium, on the degree of inhomogeneous broadening, the mode separation and location of the medium in the cavity. Simple formation of sharp output spikes at the fundamental frequency are expected where crystals like ruby or YAG are placed near the edges of the cavity. Sharp spikes at twice the fundamental frequency are expected when these solids are placed in the center of a cavity. Investigations have been completed on the mode-locking in ruby lasers where the crystals are located near the mirrors or in the center of the cavity. The observed results are in agreement with the theory. Phase-Locking of Laser Oscillators by Injected Signal and the Minimum Frequency Separation in Rotation Sensing Ring Lasers. The condition for frequency-locking of a laser oscillator by an externally injected signal is derived. The results are valid for both homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened lines. Effects of Intensity-Dependent Anomalous Dispersion on the Mode Shapes of Fabry-Perot Oscillators. Previous work in this laboratory, as well as work by Fox and Li, has shown that the mode shapes in Fabry-Perot resonators do not change much due to the intensity-dependent saturation of the laser medium. The only effect sometimes expected with curved mirrors is that the lowest threshold oscillating mode is not the Te00 mode but one exhibiting radial nodes. However, the calculations assume that the laser oscillation is one line center. (Author).

Book Principles of Laser Dynamics

Download or read book Principles of Laser Dynamics written by Y.I. Khanin and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph summarizes major achievements in laser dynamics over the past three decades. The book begins with two introductory Chapters. Chapter 1 offers general considerations on quantum oscillators, formulates the requirements for the laser key elements and shows how these requirements are met in different laser systems. The second Chapter proposes the mathematical models used in semiclassical laser theory, discusses the approximations and simplifications in particular cases, and specifies the range of applicability of these models. In Chapters 3-5 attention is given primarily to the steady states and their stability, the laser behavior in the instability domain, the characteristics of regular and chaotic pulsations and the nature of their mechanisms. Chapter 6 deals with the processes in a laser, accompanying the time variance of laser parameters. Considerable attention is given to a laser response to weak, low-frequency modulation of the parameters. The problems addressed therein are resonant modulation enhancement, transition to the nonlinear regime, chaotic response to periodic impact, spike-like generation due to variation of the cavity geometry and a laser rod temperature drift. Laser behavior is subject to qualitative changes if its optical elements exhibit nonlinear properties. The action of a saturable absorber, which leads to a loss of laser stability and provides passive Q-modulation, is investigated. To a much lesser degree the researchers' attention has been attracted by other nonlinear effects such as self-focusing, e.g., which may have a strong influence on laser dynamics. All of these issues are covered in Chapter 7. The book is intended for researchers, engineers, graduate and post-graduate students majoring in quantum electronics.

Book Self mode Locking in Inhomogeneously broadened CW Lasers

Download or read book Self mode Locking in Inhomogeneously broadened CW Lasers written by Gerald Raymond Willenbring and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical discussion of self-mode locking in multimode CW gas lasers is presented. The average saturated gain profile is assumed to be nearly flat in the frequency range of the oscillating modes because the homogeneous pressure-broadened linewidth is larger than the intermode frequency spacing. For He-Ne and He-Cd(+) lasers the gain fluctuations which occur as the pulses propagate through the active medium are believed to be small since the pulse velocity has been found to be approximately the same as the group velocity associated with the average dispersion. Estimates of the recovery time for the inversion density in a He-Ne laser indicate that the gain variations are a few percent of the average gain. An experimental technique for measuring the mode phases was developed, and measurements were made on a self-locked He-Ne laser with about seven modes. The results show that the modes are not in phase, and that, for the particular laser used, one mode toward the high-frequency end of the spectrum is lagging the others in phase by about 40 degrees. Book Dynamics of an Inhomogeneously Broadened Passively Mode locked Laser

Download or read book Dynamics of an Inhomogeneously Broadened Passively Mode locked Laser written by Alexander Pimenov and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study theoretically the effect of inhomogeneous broadening of the gain and absorption lines on the dynamics of a passively mode-locked laser. We demonstrate numerically using travelling wave equations the formation of a Lamb-dip instability and suppression of Q-switching in a laser with large inhomogeneous broadening. We derive simplified delay-differential equation model for a mode-locked laser with inhomogeneously broadened gain and absorption lines and perform numerical bifurcation analysis of this model.

Download or read book Lasers and Synergetics written by Robert Graham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers and Synergetics, written to honour Hermann Haken on his 60th birthday, is concerned with the two main areas of research to which Prof. Haken has made fundamental contributions. In fact, the two areas are interrelated since the development of the interdisciplinary science synergetics has been closely connected with the emergence of laser theory. Synergetics deals with complex systems that possess the fundamental property of spontaneous selforganization of their macroscopic behaviour. The book summarizes basic ideas, important concepts and principles used to describe selforganizing systems from a unified viewpoint. Special attention is paid to lasers, nonlinear optics and to coherence phenomena in other physical, biological and sociological systems. Some surveys of historical developments are presented, but most space is devoted to the publication of recent results and the description of current research work.
