Book excerpt: While doing our project on the determinants of students' intention to start their businesses, we selected the context of university students at the preparatory-level in Saudi. Applying the theory of planned behavior is found to be limited among university students at the preparatory-level. We reviewed different theories and this paper will discuss the reasons why we selected updating the theory of planned behavior over the other theories. Furthermore, Islamic entrepreneurship writing is not ignored. There is indeed an alarming concern among researchers about the appropriate theoretical background, by doing that we could overcome obstacles to understand the determinants of intentions among preparatory level students who are willing to start their own business. The students in that stage are neither graduates nor sufficiently skilled. Therefore, using an analytical review method, we have discussed the reasons for selecting one theoretical background over another, the role of religion in their intention. This discussion will hopefully help both the students and the policymakers, particularly the sector looking at entrepreneurs, to acquire comprehensive view about the impact of entrepreneur education on student's intention.

Book excerpt: Interest in the functioning of the human mind can certainly be traced to Plato and Aristotle who often dealt with issues of perceptions and motivations. While the Greeks may have contemplated the human condition, the modern study of the human mind can be traced back to Sigmund Freud (1900) and the psychoanalytic movement. He began the exploration of both conscious and unconscious factors that propelled humans to engage in a variety of behaviors. While Freud’s focus may have been on repressed sexuality our focus in this volume lies elsewhere. We are concerned herein with the expression of the cognitions, motivations, passions, intentions, perceptions, and emotions associated with entrepreneurial behaviors. We are attempting in this volume to expand on the work of why entrepreneurs think d- ferently from other people (Baron, 1998, 2004). During the decade of the 1990s the eld of entrepreneurship research seemingly abandoned the study of the entrepreneur. This was the result of earlier research not being able to demonstrate some unique entrepreneurial personality, trait, or char- teristic (Brockhaus and Horwitz, 1986). It was both a naïve and simplistic search for the “holy grail” of what made entrepreneurs the way they are. However, many of the researchers in this volume have never gave up the belief that a better und- standing of the mind of the entrepreneur would give us a better understanding of the processes that lead to the creation of new ventures.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship is a major economic force and a salient personal behavior through which individuals achieve personal goals. A better understanding of entrepreneurial intention is crucial to fostering entrepreneurial behavior since intention precedes behavior. Considering the importance of the concepts of social and commercial entrepreneurs, the study examined whether social and commercial entrepreneurial intentions are motivated by a similar set of attitudes and personal values. It provided an answer to why and how an individual intends to become either a social or a commercial entrepreneur.To understand motivational similarities and differences between social and commercial entrepreneurial intention, the conceptual framework relying on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Basic Human Values Theory was proposed. In the developed model, the value set of entrepreneurial intentions is differentiated and categorized through Schwartz's personal values and materialism. And perceived behavioral control and attitude towards entrepreneurship, two constructs capturing attitudinal differences, were used as two main explanatory variables with subjective norms (SN) as a moderator to represent its motivating power on attitudes, values, and intentions. Analyses of survey data collected from 1029 participants demonstrated a significant direct effect of attitude towards entrepreneurship, perceived behavioral control, self-enhancement values, and materialism on both entrepreneurial intentions. Self-transcendence affects social entrepreneurial intention significantly. Further, in the presence of positive subjective norms, a positive change in perceived behavioral control led to the development of both entrepreneurial intentions. And in the presence of openness to change values, a positive change in attitude toward commercial entrepreneurship motivated the development of commercial entrepreneurial intention. The remaining personal values negatively moderated the relationship between attitudinal components and entrepreneurial intentions. In the presence of materialism, a positive change in attitudinal components led to a negative intention to pursue entrepreneurship as a career. The corroborating evidence of the effect of materialism on social entrepreneurial intention development supported the underlying economic motive of social entrepreneurs. SPSS hierarchical regression technique tested proposed hypotheses using data collected from student subjects and the MTurk sample.

Entrepreneurship is recognized as a key determinant of economic growth and progress, yet there are conflicting findings in literature on the role of closer and wider social valuation in entrepreneurial intention formation. The study is an attempt to close this gap as it specifically delves into the role played by social valuation in configuring entrepreneurial intentions. The study is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and investigates the relationship between social valuation, TPB constructs and entrepreneurial intention. Data was collected from 480 final year business management students using convenience sampling method. The data was analyzed by deploying variancebased Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed model. The findings of the study validate the model as it has an explanatory power of 76.2%. The findings support the major role played by social valuation in configuring entrepreneurial intentions. All the model paths are found to be supported.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States.
