Book Theory of Kinetic Ballooning Modes Excited by Energetic Particles in Tokamaks

Download or read book Theory of Kinetic Ballooning Modes Excited by Energetic Particles in Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have analyzed theoretically the resonant excitations of kinetic ballooning modes (KBM) by the energetic ions/alpha particles in tokamaks. Our theory includes finite-size orbit effects of both circulating and trapped particles. With energetic-particle contributions suppressed in the singular inertial layer, an analytic.dispersion relation can then be derived via an asymptotic matching analysis. The dispersion relation, in particular, demonstrates the existence of two types of modes; that is, the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) gap mode and the energetic-particle continuum mode. Specific expressions for real frequencies, growth rates and threshold conditions are also derived for a model slowing-down beam ion distribution function.

Book A Unified Theory of Resonant Excitation of Kinetic Ballooning Modes by Energetic Ions

Download or read book A Unified Theory of Resonant Excitation of Kinetic Ballooning Modes by Energetic Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete theory of wave-particle interactions is presented whereby both circulating and trapped energetic ions can destabilize kinetic ballooning modes in tokamaks. Four qualitatively different types of resonances, involving wave-precessional drift, wave-transit, wave-bounce, and precessional drift-bounce interactions, are identified, and the destabilization potential of each is assessed. For a characteristic slowing-down distribution function, the dominant interaction is that which taps those resonant ions with the highest energy. Implications of the theory for present and future generation fusion experiments are discussed. 16 refs.

Book Effects of Energetical Particles on Ballooning Modes in High Temperature Tokamaks

Download or read book Effects of Energetical Particles on Ballooning Modes in High Temperature Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work done by Science Applications International Corporation to study the effects of energetic particles on the microstability of a high temperature tokamak. The effects of an energetic population on ballooning modes in a large aspect ratio, shifted circular flux surface tokamak equilibrium are investigated with the newly developed gryokinetic numerical technique. The gryokinetic equations for the background ion and electron, as well as that of the energetic population are solved directly as an initial problem. The energetic particles are modeled with a slow-down distribution in energy. It is found that the ballooning mode stability of the plasma with an energetic species of increasing concentration does not differ much from an increase in the background plasma beta, except for possible energetic particle drift resonances. This result is encouraging to the idea that energetic particles such as alphas may be used to stabilize the ballooning modes in a fusion reactor.

Book Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasma Physics

Download or read book Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasma Physics written by Linjin Zheng and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the ideal magnetohydrodynamic theory for magnetically conned fusion plasmas. Advanced topics are presented in attempting to fill the gap between the up-to-date research developments and plasma physics textbooks. Nevertheless, they are self contained and trackable with the mathematical treatments detailed and underlying physics explained. Both analytical theories and numerical schemes are given. Besides the current research developments in this field, the future prospects are also discussed. Nowadays, it is believed that, if the ideal MHD theory predicts major instabilities, none of the magnetic confinements of fusion plasmas can survive. The author has also written the book Advanced Tokamak Stability Theory. In view of its importance, the MHD theory is further systematically elaborated in this book. The conventional ideal MHD framework is reviewed together with the newly developed multi-parallel-fluid MHD theory. The MHD equilibrium theory and code are described with the non-letter-'X' separatrix feature pointed out. The continuum modes, quasi-modes, phase mixing, and Alfven resonance heating are analysed. The analytical theories for MHD stability in tokamak configurations are systematically presented, such as the interchange, peeling, ballooning, toroidal Alfven modes, and kink type of modes. The global stability computations are also addressed, including resistive wall modes, error-field amplifications, and Alfven modes, etc.

Book Topics in Magnetohydrodynamics

Download or read book Topics in Magnetohydrodynamics written by Linjin Zheng and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand plasma physics intuitively one need to master the MHD behaviors. As sciences advance, gap between published textbooks and cutting-edge researches gradually develops. Connection from textbook knowledge to up-to-dated research results can often be tough. Review articles can help. This book contains eight topical review papers on MHD. For magnetically confined fusion one can find toroidal MHD theory for tokamaks, magnetic relaxation process in spheromaks, and the formation and stability of field-reversed configuration. In space plasma physics one can get solar spicules and X-ray jets physics, as well as general sub-fluid theory. For numerical methods one can find the implicit numerical methods for resistive MHD and the boundary control formalism. For low temperature plasma physics one can read theory for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids etc.

Book General Theory of Kinetic Ballooning Modes

Download or read book General Theory of Kinetic Ballooning Modes written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ballooning mode formalism, previously developed for the ideal MHD problem, is applied here to the kinetic problem in tokamaks. The general two-dimensional equation governing drift and trapped-electron eigenmodes reduces to a one-dimensional integral equation along the lines of force with the radial structure determined by a WKB procedure. Comparisons made between the present one-dimensional code and a previous two-dimensional code embodying identical physical assumptions indicate reasonable agreement. This correspondence holds both for the structure along the field line and for the radial structure in the special case of closely spaced turning points.
