Book Introduction to Collective Behavior and Collective Action

Download or read book Introduction to Collective Behavior and Collective Action written by David L. Miller and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Millers expanded third edition makes it the definitive source on collective behavior and collective action. Up-to-date and meticulously researched, this popular volume continues to provide a systematic overview of theory and research. Each topic is meaningfully linked to the appropriate theories of collective behavior (mass hysteria, emergent-norm, and value-added perspectives) and collective action (social-behavioral interactionist, resource mobilization, and value-added perspectives). Rumor, mass hysteria, fads and fashion, UFOs, sports, migrations, disasters, riots, protest, and social movements are among the topics presented in a unique side-by-side presentation of the two disciplines. In an engaging, accessible style, Miller offers detailed discussion of classic sociological studies interspersed with intriguing modern-day examples that students will enjoy reading. His thorough topical treatment effectively reduces the need for outside readings.

Book Theories of Group Behavior

Download or read book Theories of Group Behavior written by Brian Mullen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1983, we began to organize a symposium entitled "General Social Psychological Theories of Group Behavior." Our goal was to encourage the extension and application of basic current social psychology to group behavior. The symposium was presented in the spring of 1984 at the Eastern Psychological Association convention in Baltimore and the interest that it generated led to discussions with colleagues and friends about similar efforts by social psychologists, eventually resulting in the present book. Some clarification about the contents is in order. First, the theories presented here are clearly social psychological in scope and level of analysis, as discussed in the Introduction (Chapter 1). However, we are not trying to encompass sociological, anthropological, political, or historical theoretical approaches to group behavior. Second, while the theories comprise a wide-ranging and representative, if not quite exhaustive, selection of social psychological theories of group behavior, there are some interesting and general perspectives that are not represented. For example, one perspective that is conspicuous by its absence is some variant of learning theory. Aside from the rare, notable exception (e.g., Buss, 1979), little work currently is being done on group behavior from a learning theoretic perspective. Our inclusion or exclusion of a theory reflects our judgment regarding its currency and accessibility to social psychological researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collective Behavior During the decade and a half since it was taken off an airy diet Of instincts and put on a nourishing diet Of factual data, social psychology has been the child prodigy and the problem. Child Of the social sciences. Growing awkwardly and sometimes randomly, but always growing at a tremendous. Rate, it was bold and meek by turns. Roundly cursed by some for the havoc its virile concepts caused in the elder disciplines, it was just as roundly praised by others for What it contributed to these disciplines. Social psychology still retains its youthful vigor, but it has now passed its troubled adolescence and has arrived at a mature understanding of its phenomena. That understanding, briefly stated, is that the personality Of the human being is acquired in the course Of social interactions with other human beings. Book Dynamics and Analysis of Alignment Models of Collective Behavior

Download or read book Dynamics and Analysis of Alignment Models of Collective Behavior written by Roman Shvydkoy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a class of alignment models based on the so-called Cucker-Smale system as well as its kinetic and hydrodynamic counterparts. Cutting edge research in the area of collective behavior is presented, including emerging techniques from fluid mechanics, fractional analysis, and kinetic theory. Analytical aspects are highlighted throughout, such as regularity theory and long time behavior of solutions. Featuring open problems, readers will be motivated to apply these breakthrough methods to future research. The chapters offer an overview of state of the art research with introductions to core concepts. Chapter One introduces the central focus of the book: The agent-based Cucker-Smale system. Further agent-based systems and alignment systems are covered in chapters Two and Three. Following this are chapters covering the kinetic and hydrodynamic variants of the Cucker-Smale system. The core well-posedness theory of both smooth and singular models is then presented. Chapter Eight discusses the fully developed one-dimensional theory. The final chapter presents some of the known partial results concerning the regularity of multidimensional Euler Alignment systems. Dynamics and Analysis of Alignment Models of Collective Behavior is ideal for graduate students and researchers studying PDEs, especially those interested in the active areas of collective behavior and alignment models.

Book Handbook of Classical Sociological Theory

Download or read book Handbook of Classical Sociological Theory written by Seth Abrutyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first handbook focussing on classical social theory. It offers extensive discussions of debates, arguments, and discussions in classical theory and how they have informed contemporary sociological theory. The book pushes against the conventional classical theory pedagogy, which often focused on single theorists and their contributions, and looks at isolating themes capturing the essence of the interest of classical theorists that seem to have relevance to modern research questions and theoretical traditions. This book presents new approaches to thinking about theory in relationship to sociological methods.
