Book T S Eliot s Dramatic Theory and Practice

Download or read book T S Eliot s Dramatic Theory and Practice written by Carol H. Smith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there have been innumerable studies of T. S. Eliot, this is the first to examine closely the changes in his dramatic practice and to relate them to his artistic and intellectual development. Professor Smith finds Eliot's dramatic theory rooted in his conception of the need for order in religion and art; she traces this concept as it evolved from the overtly religious The Rock and Murder in the Cathedral through such symbolic drawing-room plays as The Family Reunion, The Cocktail Party, and The Confidential Clerk, to Eliot’s latest study of human and divine love in The Elder Statesman. Carol H. Smith explores Eliot’s interest in the jazz rhythms of the English music hall, in the mythical method of Yeats and Joyce, and in the work of the Cambridge School of Classical Anthropology. Originally published in 1963. Book T S Eliot and the Art of Collaboration

Download or read book T S Eliot and the Art of Collaboration written by Richard Badenhausen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Badenhausen examines the crucial role that collaboration with other writers played in the development of T. S. Eliot's works from the earliest poetry and unpublished prose to the late plays. He demonstrates Eliot's dependence on collaboration in order to create, but also his struggle to accept the implications of the process. In case-studies of Eliot's collaborations, Badenhausen reveals the complexities of Eliot's theory and practice of collaboration. Examining a wide range of familiar and uncollected materials, Badenhausen explores Eliot's social, psychological, textual encounters with collaborators such as Ezra Pound, John Hayward, Martin Browne, and Vivienne Eliot, among others. Finally, this study shows how Eliot's later work increasingly accommodates his audience as he attempted to apply his theories of collaboration more broadly to social, cultural, and political concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T S Eliot is known for his typical critical concepts in literature. Writing on Eliot was not an easy task, nonetheless I, as a student of literature, have tried to express myself on the use and practice of the indigenous ideas like 'impersonality of poetry' and 'literary tradition' in an academic setting. I hope this will help especially young students understand Eliot in a better way and will also help and encourage me to read and work more on the writers of his class. Eliot can be termed as 'Mirza Ghalib' regarding sophistication and difficulties of his poetic expressions; every time you read them, you find yet new meanings and themes between the same lines. this timeless quality does not let them get obsolete and this is what will keep pulling the attention of researchers of every age to work on them from newer angles. I gladly welcome esuggestions to improve upon my work. I thank Lambert Academic Publishers for honouring me with publication.

Book T S Eliot s Dialectical Imagination

Download or read book T S Eliot s Dialectical Imagination written by Jewel Spears Brooker and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What principles connect—and what distinctions separate—“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” The Waste Land, and Four Quartets? The thought-tormented characters in T. S. Eliot’s early poetry are paralyzed by the gap between mind and body, thought and action. The need to address this impasse is part of what drew Eliot to philosophy, and the failure of philosophy to appease his disquiet is the reason he gave for abandoning it. In T. S. Eliot’s Dialectical Imagination, Jewel Spears Brooker argues that two of the principles that Eliot absorbed as a PhD student at Harvard and Oxford were to become permanent features of his mind, grounding his lifelong quest for wholeness and underpinning most of his subsequent poetry. The first principle is that contradictions are best understood dialectically, by moving to perspectives that both include and transcend them. The second is that all truths exist in relation to other truths. Together or in tandem, these two principles—dialectic and relativism—constitute the basis of a continual reshaping of Eliot’s imagination. The dialectic serves as a kinetic principle, undergirding his impulse to move forward by looping back, and the relativism supports his ingrained ambivalence. Brooker considers Eliot’s poetry in three blocks, each represented by a signature masterpiece: “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” The Waste Land, and Four Quartets. She correlates these works with stages in the poet’s intellectual and spiritual life: disjunction, ambivalence, and transcendence. Using a methodology that is both inductive—moving from texts to theories—and comparative—juxtaposing the evolution of Eliot’s mind as reflected in his philosophical prose and the evolution of style as seen in his poetry—Brooker integrates cultural and biographical contexts. The first book to read Eliot’s poems alongside all of his prose and letters, T. S. Eliot’s Dialectical Imagination will revise received readings of his mind and art, as well as of literary modernism.
