This book was released on 1983 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of methods is based on lecture notes used at a FAO/DANIDA training course held in Mombasa, Kenya, in May-June 1980. The methods presented are: regression and correlation, estimation of growth parameters from length-frequency data, estimation of mortalities (total, natural, fishing mortality) and analysis of catch and effort data. A brief annotated bibliography of tropical fish stock assessment is included.

Book Rights Based Fishing

Download or read book Rights Based Fishing written by P.A. Neher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this conference was on a quay of the port of Bergen in March 1985. Ragnar Amason suggested to Phil Neher a small, mid-Atlantic conference on recent developments in fishery management. In the event, more than twenty papers were scheduled and over one hundred and fifty conferees were registered. Logistical complications were sorted through for a summer 1988 conference in Iceland. The really innovative management programs were in the South Pacific; Aus tralia and New Zealand had introduced Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs); and Iceland, Norway and Canada were also experimenting with quotas. It seemed to the program committee (Rognvaldur Hannesson and Geoffrey Waugh were soon on board) that these quotas had more or less characteristics of property rights. Property rights were also taking other forms in other places (time and area licenses, restrictive licensing of vessels and gear, traditional use rights). The idea of rights based fishing became the theme of the conference.

Book Ecology of the Marine Fishes of Cuba

Download or read book Ecology of the Marine Fishes of Cuba written by Rodolfo Claro and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba's coastal waters are home to one of the most diverse fish faunas in the Western Hemisphere. However, until now, information in English about Cuban marine fishes and their habitats has been limited. This comprehensive guide to the region's fishes fills that void. Originally published in Spanish in 1994, Ecology of the Marine Fishes of Cuba has been completely updated and revised for this English edition. The book collects and expands on the findings of more than 20 years of work by and international team of ichthyologists and marine biologists studying the coastal fishes and habitats of Cuba. In chapters arranged topically, the thirteen contributors detail the physical characteristics of the Cuban coast; document the physiology, behavior, reproduction, feeding patterns, and growth patterns of the region's fishes; and survey Cuba's fisheries management programs. The result is an unparalleled integration of English- and Spanish-language references on coastal fishes of the western Atlantic, complete with a comprehensive bibliography that constitutes a valuable reference in its own right. The extensive information presented here establishes an important foundation for comparisons of regional biological variations and demonstrates the need for proactive habitat and fishery management policies in the area.

Book An Ecological Framework for Marine Fishery Investigations

Download or read book An Ecological Framework for Marine Fishery Investigations written by J. F. Caddy and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text is intended as supplementary reading for fisheries workers, especially in developing countries, who do not always have ready access to current literature on applied marine ecology. An attempt is made to develop a wide range of concepts in a form that will hopefully encourage their incorporation into a practical, decision-making context. The food web and associated trophic interactions form the principal theme, in an approach that gives equal emphasis to qualitative, as well as the less easily measured quantitative considerations. An attempt is made to illustrate the consequences of the aggregated nature of much of marine production, as well as the subsequent dispersal of production in space and time, and how these processes affect the potential for economic harvest of commercial components of the ecosystem. Separate sections touch on environmental influences on production, relevant spatial and temporal scales for ecosystem analysis, life history strategies, diversity and stability, the concepts of the ecological niche, the community and the assemblage, and outline some first steps towards quantifiying production in marine ecosystems. Different approaches to representing trophic and other interactions are discussed, with examples from the literature. Reference is made to several ecological subsystems, in order to illustrate the main concepts presented. These include the mangrove ecosystem, the arcto-boreal macrophyte community, a mediterranean demersal fish assemblage, and the oceanic ecosystem associated with high seas tuna stocks. In practical terms, it is concluded that the first and simplest approach to multispecies resource management is not necessarily the manipulation of individual food web components, but the identification, mapping and conservation of critical habitats, especially centres of local production, and their associated ecological dissipation structures.
