Manuscripts of the invited talks presented at this conference are the contents of this volume. These manuscripts were prepared and delivered to the editors by the authors; the responsibility for any errors in scientific con tent is theirs. While we, the editors, have made every effort to keep this volume as free from typographical errors as possible, we accept responsibility for such errors as do occur, even those which may be mistaken for scientific error. All but one of the invited talks given at the conference are reported here; those authors apparently felt unable to provide the editors with manuscripts. The development in the last few decades of the microscopic many-body theory of correlated fermion systems has been a fertile ground not only for spectacular achievements in basic science in various areas of research, but also for technological applications. Among the numerous phenomena discovered and studied in systems of many fermions, one can cite the superconductivity in metals, the superfluidity in 3He, nuclear matter and nuclei, the quantum Hall effect, the giant resonances in nuclei, the Anderson location and the metal-insulator transition, hole and electron diffusion in doped semiconductors, etc. All these phenomena can be understood only in terms of correlations occurring in many-fermion systems, and the formulation of the correct microscopic theory of each phenomenon has marked a milestone in pure science as well as the starting point for the exploitation of its potential technological applications. It is likely that in the future further developments will take place in this field of basic science.The Hispalensis International School is a summer school aimed mainly at young physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, engaged in research work at the predoctoral or recent postdoctoral level. The objective of the School provide an opportunity for participants to come into contact with experienced researchers and hear their clear account of the state of the art of many-body theories in nuclear physics, as well as in related fields, and the main future lines of development.

Book excerpt: The 10th International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods, MaxEnt 90, was held in Laramie, Wyoming from 30 July to 3 August 1990. This volume contains the scientific presentations given at that meeting. This series of workshops originated in Laramie in 1981, where the first three of what were to become annual workshops were held. The fourth meeting was held in Calgary. the fifth in Laramie, the sixth and seventh in Seattle, the eighth in Cambridge, England, and the ninth at Hanover, New Hampshire. It is most appropriate that the tenth workshop, occurring in the centennial year of Wyoming's statehood, was once again held in Laramie. The original purpose of these workshops was twofold. The first was to bring together workers from diverse fields of scientific research who individually had been using either some form of the maximum entropy method for treating ill-posed problems or the more general Bayesian analysis, but who, because of the narrow focus that intra-disciplinary work tends to impose upon most of us, might be unaware of progress being made by others using these same techniques in other areas. The second was to introduce to those who were somewhat aware of maximum entropy and Bayesian analysis and wanted to learn more, the foundations, the gestalt, and the power of these analyses.
