Book Political Theory

Download or read book Political Theory written by G. C. Field and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1956, Political Theory explores the historical development of political ideas and analyses some basic concepts of contemporary political theory, including the notions of the State, of Sovereignty and the Law. The book is based on lectures in Political Theory given by the author, G. C. Field, in the universities at which he taught. It opens by considering the development of political ideas by providing an overview of the ideas current at the time of original publication in comparison to the ideas of earlier ages. It then progresses into a more detailed discussion of specific political theories. It will appeal to those with an interest in the history of political thought and developments in political theory.

Book Political Theories of Modern Government Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Political Theories of Modern Government Routledge Revivals written by Peter Self and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-11-05 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissued work, originally published in 1985, is a uniquely broad and original survey of theories and beliefs about the growth, behaviour, performance and reform of the governments of modern Western democracies. After analysing the external pressures which have shaped modern governments, the author examines four different schools of political thought which seek to explain the behaviour and performance of governments, and which offer different remedies for the pluralism, corporatism and bureaucracy. To examine and test these general theories, the author looks closely at how governments actually work. The book is illustrated with examples drawn from various Western societies. The final chapters present the author’s own conclusion about the future role of government, the limits of market philosophy, the future of politics, and the principles and problems of institutional reform.

Book Reconstructing the Classics

Download or read book Reconstructing the Classics written by Edward Bryan Portis and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To truly understand the substance and value of any great philosopher’s work, students must examine political theory against the backdrop of history, the surrounding literature, and the individual theorist’s views on human nature and rational motivation. In this third edition of his classic text, Edward Portis provides students with the framework they need to fully appreciate the original texts they are reading and apply the concepts they are learning. Fully updated since the previous edition almost a decade ago, Portis expands his coverage to include a complete chapter on Max Weber. Further, Portis strengthens his lucid introductions to the greatest theorists of Western political thought, proving them indispensable guides for both the politically engaged citizen and the practicing social scientist. He also provides suggestions, updated for this edition, for further reading in political theory.

Book Political Theory and the Modern State

Download or read book Political Theory and the Modern State written by David Held and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an incisive overview of central issues and controversies in political thought and analysis. It includes major discussions of the idea of the modern state, contemporary theories of the state, problems of power and legitimation, new forms of democratic ideal, citizenship and social movements, the direction of public policy and the fate of sovereignty in the modern global system. While analysing these topics, the author critically assesses the thought of many of those who have contributed decisively to political discussion. Among those whose works are discussed are classic figures such as Hobbes, Locke, Mill and Marx, as well as contemporary writers such as Habermas, Offe and Giddens. Political Theory and the Modern State is an ideal resource for students seeking an introduction to modern politics and political sociology. It is also an original statement about the many competing perspectives in political thought today.

Book A History of Modern Political Thought

Download or read book A History of Modern Political Thought written by Gary K. Browning and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we to understand past political thinkers? Is it a matter simply of reading their texts again and again? Do we have to relate past texts of political thought to the contexts in which ideas were composed and in which the aims of past thinkers were formulated? Or should past political theories be deconstructed so as to uncover not what their authors maintain, but what the texts reveal? In this book, theories of interpreting past political thinkers are examined and the interpretive methods of a range of theories are reviewed, including those of Hegel, Marx, Oakeshott, Collingwood, the Cambridge School, Foucault, Derrida and Gadamer. The application of these theories of interpretation to notable modern political theorists, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Bentham, Mill, Nietzsche and Beauvoir is then used as a way of understanding modern political thought and of assessing interpretive theories of past political thought. The result is a book which sees the history of modern political thought as more than a procession of political theories but rather as a reflection on the meaning of past political thought and its interpretation. It provides a way of reading the history of modern political thought, in which the question of interpretation matters both for understanding how we interpret the past but also for considering what it means to undertake political thinking.
