Book Periodic Differential Equations

Download or read book Periodic Differential Equations written by F. M. Arscott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodic Differential Equations: An Introduction to Mathieu, Lamé, and Allied Functions covers the fundamental problems and techniques of solution of periodic differential equations. This book is composed of 10 chapters that present important equations and the special functions they generate, ranging from Mathieu's equation to the intractable ellipsoidal wave equation. This book starts with a survey of the main problems related to the formation of periodic differential equations. The subsequent chapters deal with the general theory of Mathieu's equation, Mathieu functions of integral order, and the principles of asymptotic expansions. These topics are followed by discussions of the stable and unstable solutions of Mathieu's general equation; general properties and characteristic exponent of Hill's equation; and the general nature and solutions of the spheroidal wave equation. The concluding chapters explore the polynomials, orthogonality properties, and integral relations of Lamé's equation. These chapters also describe the wave functions and solutions of the ellipsoidal wave equation. This book will prove useful to pure and applied mathematicians and functional analysis.

Book Field Theory Handbook

Download or read book Field Theory Handbook written by Parry Moon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let us first state exactly what this book is and what it is not. It is a compendium of equations for the physicist and the engineer working with electrostatics, magne tostatics, electric currents, electromagnetic fields, heat flow, gravitation, diffusion, optics, or acoustics. It tabulates the properties of 40 coordinate systems, states the Laplace and Helmholtz equations in each coordinate system, and gives the separation equations and their solutions. But it is not a textbook and it does not cover relativistic and quantum phenomena. The history of classical physics may be regarded as an interplay between two ideas, the concept of action-at-a-distance and the concept of a field. Newton's equation of universal gravitation, for instance, implies action-at-a-distance. The same form of equation was employed by COULOMB to express the force between charged particles. AMPERE and GAUSS extended this idea to the phenomenological action between currents. In 1867, LUDVIG LORENZ formulated electrodynamics as retarded action-at-a-distance. At almost the same time, MAXWELL presented the alternative formulation in terms of fields. In most cases, the field approach has shown itself to be the more powerful.

Download or read book Linear Theory written by A. Cemal Eringen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastodynamics, Volume II: Linear Theory is a continuation of Volume I and discusses the dynamical theory of linear isotropic elasticity. The volume deals with the fundamental theorems regarding elastodynamics and the different mathematical methods of solution and their employment in one, two, and three dimensions. The text outlines the fundamentals of linear elastodynamics and explains basic equations, displacement formulation, stress formulation, and the uniqueness theorem of elastodynamics. The book also investigates elastodynamic problems involving one-space dimension in governing boundaries, equations, and initial conditions. The book then compares two-dimensional problems as being subject to more precise mathematical analysis compared to three-dimensional situations by using scalar wave equations. The text then analyzes elastodynamic problems in three space dimensions when the solution depends on the condition of separability of the vector wave equation and the satisfaction of the boundary conditions. The diffraction of elastic waves is also described using two approaches: the integral equation method or the Eigen function technique. The book can prove valuable to researchers and practitioners whose work involves advanced statistics, general physics, and thermodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of Mathematical Literature discusses the bibliographic concerns of mathematical literature. The book is comprised of 14 chapters that cover characteristics of mathematical literature and provide reviews of some of the major literature in various mathematical fields. The text first discusses the role of the literature in mathematics, and then proceeds to tackling major organizations, journals, and reference materials. Next, the book provides critical accounts of the major literature in various mathematical fields, such as combinatorics, topology, and mathematical programming. The book will be of great use to students, practitioners, and researchers of mathematics. Other profession handling math literature, such as teachers, librarians, and translators will also find this book invaluable.

Book Solved Problems in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics

Download or read book Solved Problems in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics written by Claude Gignoux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to bridge the gap between the well-known Newtonian mechanics and the studies on chaos, ordinarily reserved to experts. Several topics are treated: Lagrangian, Hamiltonian and Jacobi formalisms, studies of integrable and quasi-integrable systems. The chapter devoted to chaos also enables a simple presentation of the KAM theorem. All the important notions are recalled in summaries of the lectures. They are illustrated by many original problems, stemming from real-life situations, the solutions of which are worked out in great detail for the benefit of the reader. This book will be of interest to undergraduate students as well as others whose work involves mechanics, physics and engineering in general.
