Lors du bicentenaire de la parution de l'ouvrage, les partisans de la taxinomie numérique s'" approprièrent Adanson ", en voyant dans sa méthode un pur essai combinatoire déductif. Or, sa démarche n'a manifestement pas consisté à établir des groupements naturels au terme d'un gigantesque et exhaustif calcul. En étudiant la genèse et le développement de cette méthode, nous avons ainsi tenté d'en dégager les véritables principes. Et c'est en effectuant ce trajet que nous nous sommes aperçus du poids déterminant des influences subies par Adanson : influence de Buffon, de Linné, influence aussi des concepts dominants de la philosophie et de la physique du milieu du XVIIIe siècle. La méthode naturelle adansonienne, réputée pour son originalité, est d'abord la résultante d'une somme d'influences plus ou moins consciemment intégrées par l'auteur. Quoi qu'il en soit, le transfert de concepts physiques et philosophiques dans le champ de la taxinomie a finalement produit une œuvre très singulière. Il y a, dans les Familles des plantes, des idées ayant incontestablement fait entrer la botanique dans la modernité. L'ensemble de notre étude nous a permis d'assigner à l'œuvre botanique de Michel Adanson la place déterminante qui lui revient, entre le " système sexuel " de Linné (1735) et le Genera plantarum d'Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1789).
