This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analytical Theory of Heat Statement of the Object of the Work: Object of the theoretical researches; Different examples, ring, cube, sphere, infinite prism; the variable temperature at any point whatever is a function of the coordinates and of the time. The quantity of heat, which during unit of time crosses a given surface in the interior of the solid, is also a function of the time elapsed, and of quantities which determine the form and position of the surface. The object of the theory is to discover these functions; The three specific elements which must be observed, are the capacity, the conductibility proper or permeability, and the external conductibility or penetrability. The coefficients which express them may be regarded at first as constant numbers, independent of the temperatures; First statement of the problem of terrestrial temperatures; Conditions necessary to applications of the theory. Object of the experiments; The rays of heat which escape from the same point of a surface have not the same intensity. The intensity of each ray is proportional About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Continuum Mechanics through the Ages From the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics through the Ages From the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing scientific, historic and socio-economic vision, this unique book complements two previously published volumes on the history of continuum mechanics from this distinguished author. In this volume, Gérard A. Maugin looks at the period from the renaissance to the twentieth century and he includes an appraisal of the ever enduring competition between molecular and continuum modelling views. Chapters trace early works in hydraulics and fluid mechanics not covered in the other volumes and the author investigates experimental approaches, essentially before the introduction of a true concept of stress tensor. The treatment of such topics as the viscoelasticity of solids and plasticity, fracture theory, and the role of geometry as a cornerstone of the field, are all explored. Readers will find a kind of socio-historical appraisal of the seminal contributions by our direct masters in the second half of the twentieth century. The analysis of the teaching and research texts by Duhem, Poincaré and Hilbert on continuum mechanics is key: these provide the most valuable documentary basis on which a revival of continuum mechanics and its formalization were offered in the late twentieth century. Altogether, the three volumes offer a generous conspectus of the developments of continuum mechanics between the sixteenth century and the dawn of the twenty-first century. Mechanical engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists alike will all be interested in this work which appeals to all curious scientists for whom continuum mechanics as a vividly evolving science still has its own mysteries.

Book Classical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics An Historic Axiomatic Approach

Download or read book Classical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics An Historic Axiomatic Approach written by Peter Enders and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique textbook presents a novel, axiomatic pedagogical path from classical to quantum physics. Readers are introduced to the description of classical mechanics, which rests on Euler’s and Helmholtz’s rather than Newton’s or Hamilton’s representations. Special attention is given to the common attributes rather than to the differences between classical and quantum mechanics. Readers will also learn about Schrödinger’s forgotten demands on quantization, his equation, Einstein’s idea of ‘quantization as selection problem’. The Schrödinger equation is derived without any assumptions about the nature of quantum systems, such as interference and superposition, or the existence of a quantum of action, h. The use of the classical expressions for the potential and kinetic energies within quantum physics is justified. Key features: · Presents extensive reference to original texts. · Includes many details that do not enter contemporary representations of classical mechanics, although these details are essential for understanding quantum physics. · Contains a simple level of mathematics which is seldom higher than that of the common (Riemannian) integral. · Brings information about important scientists · Carefully introduces basic equations, notations and quantities in simple steps This book addresses the needs of physics students, teachers and historians with its simple easy to understand presentation and comprehensive approach to both classical and quantum mechanics..

Book Complex Analysis

  • Author : John Stalker
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Complex Analysis written by John Stalker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All modem introductions to complex analysis follow, more or less explicitly, the pattern laid down in Whittaker and Watson [75]. In "part I'' we find the foundational material, the basic definitions and theorems. In "part II" we find the examples and applications. Slowly we begin to understand why we read part I. Historically this is an anachronism. Pedagogically it is a disaster. Part II in fact predates part I, so clearly it can be taught first. Why should the student have to wade through hundreds of pages before finding out what the subject is good for? In teaching complex analysis this way, we risk more than just boredom. Beginning with a series of unmotivated definitions gives a misleading impression of complex analy sis in particular and of mathematics in general. The classical theory of analytic functions did not arise from the idle speculation of bored mathematicians on the possible conse quences of an arbitrary set of definitions; it was the natural, even inevitable, consequence of the practical need to answer questions about specific examples. In standard texts, after hundreds of pages of theorems about generic analytic functions with only the rational and trigonometric functions as examples, students inevitably begin to believe that the purpose of complex analysis is to produce more such theorems. We require introductory com plex analysis courses of our undergraduates and graduates because it is useful both within mathematics and beyond.

Book Partial Differential Equations Modeling Analysis and Numerical Approximation

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations Modeling Analysis and Numerical Approximation written by Hervé Le Dret and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of partial differential equation problems both from the theoretical and numerical points of view. After presenting modeling aspects, it develops the theoretical analysis of partial differential equation problems for the three main classes of partial differential equations: elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic. Several numerical approximation methods adapted to each of these examples are analyzed: finite difference, finite element and finite volumes methods, and they are illustrated using numerical simulation results. Although parts of the book are accessible to Bachelor students in mathematics or engineering, it is primarily aimed at Masters students in applied mathematics or computational engineering. The emphasis is on mathematical detail and rigor for the analysis of both continuous and discrete problems.
