Book Analysis of Noise Produced by an Orderly Structure of Turbulent Jets

Download or read book Analysis of Noise Produced by an Orderly Structure of Turbulent Jets written by Jay C. Hardin and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orderly structure which has been observed recently by numerous researchers within the transition region of subsonic turbulent jets is analyzed to reveal its noise-producing potential. For a circular jet, this structure is molded as a train of toroidal vortex rings which are formed near the jet exit and propagate downstream. The noise produced by the model is evaluated from a reformulation of Lighthill's expression for the far-field acoustic density, which emphasizes the importance of the vorticity within the turbulent flow field. It is shown that the noise production occurs mainly close to the jet exit and depends primarily upon temporal changes in the toroidal radii. The analysis suggests that the process of formation of this regular structure may also be an important contribution of the high-frequency jet noise. These results may be helpful in the understanding of jet-noise generation and in new approaches to jet-noise suppression.

Book The Generation and Radiation of Supersonic Jet Noise

Download or read book The Generation and Radiation of Supersonic Jet Noise written by Geoffrey M. Lilley and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a series of specific theoretical studies directed toward the solution of jet noise generation and radiation, upstream noise radiation and combustion noise generation. Three theories are presented. Lilley's work is a new theory of jet noise generation, based on identification of acoustic and source generation terms. The acoustic 'converted wave equation' derived includes the Pridmore-Brown/Mungur shear refraction term. Plumblee presents a theoretical analysis and numerical solution techniques for solving for the radiation field from a source within a jet flow and specifically deals with radiation from an acoustic distribution initally specified at the end of a circular exhaust duct termination through the jet flow to the surrounding medium. Finally, Strahle presents a theory on afterburner type combustion noise generation and radiation. Order of magnitude analyses are made in an attempt to estimate acoustic power levels and refraction effects are also investigated. (Author).

Book Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Jet Noise Phenomena

Download or read book Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Jet Noise Phenomena written by Willard Charles Sperry and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over-all sound pressure levels were measured in an anechoic room for noise generated by cold air flow through more than twenty different nozzle configurations including converging, converging-diverging, slot, and annular types, the latter with and without center core flow. The results are examined in terms of over-all acoustic power and directivity versus mass flow and compared with various eighth power relations. The acoustic performance of most nozzles was similar in the subsonic region. However, certain annular type nozzles exhibited a marked superiority in the supersonic region. Theoretical discussions are presented concerning the generation of sound and the relationship between various turbulence and statistical theories. A modified mixing length theory is developed showing its application to turbulence generation as well as its influence on the general forcing function equation. Temperature effects are included. Empirical data are given pertaining to the correlation of jet noise from circular and annular nozzles. (Author).
