Book Theoretical Studies of Atomic and Molecular Processes Important in Space Experiments

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of Atomic and Molecular Processes Important in Space Experiments written by David R. Bates and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations have been carried out on the photoionization of OII (4S0, 2D0, and 2P0) and on the photoionization of NI (4S0, 2D0, and 2P0). An explanation has been advanced for the enhanced abundance of heavy ozone in the stratosphere. A published proposal for resolving the apparent ozone deficiency in the region above the 95 km level has been examined and shown to be unsatisfactory. A method has been devised whereby the low density limit to the rate coefficient for the termolecular association of ions and polar molecules may be found from measurements on the rate coefficient even outside the region where third order kinetics prevail. The theory of radiative association when the stabilization is brought about by an electronic transition has been developed. Book Molecular Processes in Space

Download or read book Molecular Processes in Space written by Tsutomu Watanabe and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-02-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like a river, the progress of science has a tendency to run tast or slow. Once the water meets a dam, it may stop for a while, but eventually it will flow over the top and run fast again. In scientific research, a breakthrough to overcome a simile>r barrier is often made by a small number of scientists, or perhaps by a single person of special creativity, extraordinary talent and unusual perseverance. Through such individuals science can proceed in great strides. No one can deny that Professor Kazuo Takayanagi is one of these special individuals who have played a leading role in the field of atomic and molecular physics, as well as space physics. This book is dedicated to Professor Takayanagi on the occasion of his retirement from the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. Professor Takayanagi was born in 1926 and grew up in Tomakomai in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. In his boyhood, he was interested in natural sciences, particularly astronomy. On 5th February, 1943, when he was attending secondary school, a solar eclipse was seen in his town. He organized a group of students from his school to observe the eclipse. He still remembers the scene: it grew so dark during the eclipse that two stars, Vega and Arcturus, could be seen. After graduation from the University of Tokyo in 1948, he entered the graduate school there.

Book Mesospheric Models and Related Experiments

Download or read book Mesospheric Models and Related Experiments written by G. Fiocco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1967 ESRIN and ESLAB, the two ESRO laboratories primarily concerned with basic research, held a joint symposium on Satellite and Rocket Measurements of Corpuscular Radiation from Outer Space. This was followed in September 1968 by a second symposium: Low-Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere; and in September 1969 by a third: Intercorrelated Satellite Observations Related to Solar Events. A fourth symposium, on upper atmospheric models and related experiments, took place in Frascati, 6-10 July 1970. The main aim of the symposium was to ~ssess current experimental work - both field and laboratory - related to mesospheric struc ture and composition, in the light of theoretical work on atmospheric models and atomic and molecular processes. To foster an interdisciplinary approach, the meeting brought together approximately 50 scientists working with different techniques but having a common interest in the interpretation of meso spheric phenomena. Recent work such as that presented at the symposium has deepened our knowledge of upper atmospheric composition, and increased our understanding of upper atmo spheric temperature and dynamics. In particular, it has shown that the concentration of minor species in the atmosphere is somewhat different than expected. Theoretical models have not yet considered many of the minor constituents and have generally not included dynamical effects. It is now time to reconsider these models and elaborate them in the light of recent knowledge.

Book Theoretical Study of Atomic and Molecular Processes

Download or read book Theoretical Study of Atomic and Molecular Processes written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the findings of a number of individual investigations relevant to the physics of atomic and molecular processes in the upper atmosphere as pertinent to the problem of the rate of reduction of ionization in a disturbed atmosphere. Calculations have been performed of the rates for three-body ion-electron recombination X(+) + e + M yields X + M. The process of associative detachment X( - ) + Y yields XY + e is an important mechanism for the removal of negative atomic and molecular ions. Improved calculations of potential energy curves O2( - ), relative to theoretical O2 curves, have been performed. The cross section for rotational excitation in electron polar molecule collisions, e + M(J) yields e + M (J + Delta J), where M(J) is a polar molecule in rotational state J, is large. Detailed calculations have been performed for the cross section for rotational excitation of carbon monoxide by electron impact using close-coupling methods.

Book Theoretical Research Program to Study Chemical Reactions in Aotv Bow Shock Tubes

Download or read book Theoretical Research Program to Study Chemical Reactions in Aotv Bow Shock Tubes written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus was the development, implementation, and calibration of methods for performing molecular electronic structure calculations to high accuracy. These various methods were then applied to a number of chemical reactions and species of interest to NASA, notably in the area of combustion chemistry. Among the development work undertaken was a collaborative effort to develop a program to efficiently predict molecular structures and vibrational frequencies using energy derivatives. Another major development effort involved the design of new atomic basis sets for use in chemical studies: these sets were considerably more accurate than those previously in use. Much effort was also devoted to calibrating methods for computing accurate molecular wave functions, including the first reliable calibrations for realistic molecules using full CI results. A wide variety of application calculations were undertaken. One area of interest was the spectroscopy and thermochemistry of small molecules, including establishing small molecule binding energies to an accuracy rivaling, or even on occasion surpassing, the experiment. Such binding energies are essential input to modeling chemical reaction processes, such as combustion. Studies of large molecules and processes important in both hydrogen and hydrocarbon combustion chemistry were also carried out. Finally, some effort was devoted to the structure and spectroscopy of small metal clusters, with applications to materials science problems. Taylor, Peter R.
