Book Theoretical Status Of epsilon prime epsilon

Download or read book Theoretical Status Of epsilon prime epsilon written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author gives a detailed introduction into the theoretical formalism for[epsilon][prime]/[epsilon], which measures direct CP-violation in K[yields][pi][pi] decays. The current status of hadronic matrix elements and the strange quark mass is discussed. Several possible explanations of the unexpectedly high experimental results for[epsilon][prime]/[epsilon] are pointed out: A small strange quark mass, an enhancement of the hadronic parameter B[sub 6][sup (1/2)] from the[sigma] resonance, an underestimate of isospin breaking and possible new physics contributions in the[bar s]dZ-vertex and the[bar s]d-gluon-vertex.

Book Effective Field Theory in Particle Physics and Cosmology

Download or read book Effective Field Theory in Particle Physics and Cosmology written by Sacha Davidson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of the CVIII session of the Ecole de Physique des Houches, held in July 2017, was Effective Field Theory in Particle Physics and Cosmology. Effective Field Theory (EFT) is a general method for describing quantum systems with multiple length scales in a tractable fashion. It allows to perform precise calculations in established models (such as the Standard Models of particle physics and cosmology), as well as to concisely parametrise possible effects from physics beyond the Standard Models. The goal of this school was to offer a broad introduction to the foundations and modern applications of Effective Field Theory in many of its incarnations. This is all the more important as there are preciously few textbooks covering the subject, none of them in a complete way. In this book, the lecturers present the concepts in a pedagogical way so that readers can adapt some of the latest developments to their own problems. The chapters cover almost all the lectures given at the school and will serve as an introduction to the topic and as a reference manual to students and researchers.

Book excerpt: The authors update the current status for the measurement of the direct-CP violation parameters[epsilon][prime]/[epsilon] in the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. Substantial statistics have been accumulated during the 1996-7 run and 1999 run for both[epsilon][prime]/[epsilon] and rare K[sub L] decay searches. The first KTeV result on[epsilon][prime]/[epsilon] published last year was Re([epsilon][prime]/[epsilon])= (28.0[+-] 4.1) x 10[sup[minus]4] based on the 23% data from 1996-7 run. Combining with the previous E731, NA31 and the recent preliminary NA48 results, the grand average is Re([epsilon][prime]/[epsilon])= (19.3[+-] 3.6) x 10[sup[minus]4] (with S= 1:49), more than 5[sigma] above zero. More data from both KTeV and NA48 after completing the analysis will further improve the precision of this measurement in the near future and hopefully further improve the agreement. New results on the branching ratio and form factor measurements of K[sub L][r-arrow][mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]][gamma] using 1997 data are also presented. We find that BR(K[sub L][r-arrow][mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]][gamma])= (3.66[+-] 0.04[sub stat][+-] 0.07[sub syst]) x 10[sup[minus]7]. The form factor parameter[alpha][sub K]* is measured to be[alpha][sub K]*=[minus]0.157[sub[minus]0.027][sup+0.025]. We make the first measurement of the parameter[alpha] from the D'Ambrosio, Isidori, and Portoles form factor, finding[alpha]=[minus]1.53[+-] 0.09. This measurement of[alpha] limits the CKM parameter[rho]>[minus]0.2.

Book Aspects of Bottom up Hidden Sector Models

Download or read book Aspects of Bottom up Hidden Sector Models written by Philipp Klose and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard model (SM) of particle physics is a hugely successful theory of nature, but it is incomplete. E.g., it cannot explain finite SM neutrino masses or the origin of the primordial baryon asymmetry (BAU). One way to address such problems is to postulate the existence of new but hidden particles. This thesis studies such "hidden sectors" in two ways: 1) An effective theory approach, where electroweak (EW) and GeV scale portal effective theories (PETs) are constructed that couple the SM to a generic light hidden mediator of spin 0, 1⁄2, or 1. The EW scale PETs include all portal operators of dimension d≤5. The GeV scale PETs additionally include all leading order (LO) flavour changing portal operators of dimension d≤6,7. They are used to derive a LO PET chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian that describes hidden sector induced light meson transitions in fixed target experiments like NA62 or SHiP. 2) An investigation of the type-I seesaw model, which couples the SM to n≥2 sterile neutrinos that can generate a BAU via “leptogenesis”. It is shown that thermal and spectator effects can result in a sign-flip and strong relative enhancement of the BAU in high-scale leptogenesis with two hierarchical sterile neutrinos of vanishing initial abundance. Much lighter sterile neutrinos may be detected via lepton number violating (LNV) decays at colliders, but LNV decays could be suppressed relative to lepton number conserving decays for 't Hooft natural parameter choices. It is shown that the corresponding parameter space consists of three regions: (a)with unsuppressed LNV decays, (b)with suppressed LNV decays, (c)with suppressed and unsuppressed LNV decays.
