Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaging of simple objects through coherent multiple aperture optical imaging systems was investigated. Multiple aperture telescopes are a candidate technology for the Strategic Defense Initiative missions of surveillance, tracking, and kill assessment. In this thesis, the multiaperture images of edges, slits, rectangles, and circles were theoretically predicted and experimentally produced. Photographs of the actual images produced in the lab were compared to the theoretical images, and the analytical and computer prediction techniques were found to be accurate. All of the results were analyzed to determine how different multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture geometries affected the images. It was found that multiaperture imaging produces edge enhancement. The position of a single edge could be found exactly, while multiple edges sometimes produced slight edge shifts. A computer program was developed tat predicts that edge shifts that will be observed when imaging through a given multiple aperture. Larger subaperture spacings were found to exhibit better resolution but produced more ringing about the edges. The possibility of rotating the multiple aperture system to gather more information was discussed, as well as designs that include a central subaperture.

Book Incoherent Multiple Aperture Optical Imaging Systems Analysis and Design

Download or read book Incoherent Multiple Aperture Optical Imaging Systems Analysis and Design written by Robert T. Reilander and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various multiple aperture optical arrays were compared while imaging objects illuminated with incoherent light. The aperture arrays contained from one to four sub-apertures. The objects were edges, slits, rectangles and circles. An emphasis was placed on edge resolution, and the author derived his own set of resolution criteria. Based on this analysis, a tight square four-element array was the best performer. The study concluded with an analysis of design criteria for optimum incoherent imaging resolution. Max sub-aperture size, min sub-aperture spacing, max number of sub-aperture elements, and a symmetric pattern were all determined to be desirable in order to obtain the best performance.

Book Two Point Resolution Criterion for Multi Aperture Optical Systems

Download or read book Two Point Resolution Criterion for Multi Aperture Optical Systems written by Steven M. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two point resolution criteria is the classic way of comparing telescopes. However, the standard two point resolution criterion is not appropriate for multi-aperture systems. This paper proposes a new two point resolution criterion based on the idea of thresholding the irradiances of the resulting far field diffraction patterns of multi-aperture optical systems. The threshold was defined as a fraction of the central lobe irradiance. The thresholds varied from 0.1 to 0.9 of the central lobe irradiance of the far field diffraction patterns. Theoretical data of normalized irradiance versus point separation for various multi-aperture optical systems were presented. The two point resolution for these configuration was analyzed. The two point resolution criterion using thresholds was demonstrated. The threshold criterion provided the information necessary to compare the two point resolution performance of a particular multi-aperture optical system illuminated coherently and incoherently. Also, this criterion allowed the comparison of the two point resolution performance of systems composed of three, four, and six subapertures illuminated incoherently. (Theses).

Book Enhanced Spectral Modeling of Sparse Aperture Imaging Systems

Download or read book Enhanced Spectral Modeling of Sparse Aperture Imaging Systems written by Robert E. Introne and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The research effort performed in conjunction with this dissertation focused on laying the groundwork for synthetic model-based approaches for evaluating the optical performance of sparse aperture collection systems with enhanced spectral fidelity and a polychromatic object scene. It entailed a fundamental investigation and demonstration of the first-principles physics required to model such imaging systems. This theoretical development ultimately led to the generation of a modeling concept that more rigorously addresses the spectral characteristics of classic sparse aperture optical configurations used in remote sensing applications. To demonstrate the proposed theoretical foundation, a proof-of-concept digital model was implemented that incorporates essential components of the fundamental physical processes involved with typical sparse aperture collection systems, including any potential spectral effects unique to these design configurations"--Abstract.

Book Broadband Incoherent Imaging Using Multiple Aperture Optics

Download or read book Broadband Incoherent Imaging Using Multiple Aperture Optics written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical resolution of a multiple mirror telescope can be studied through its Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). Using the figure of merit that the mirrors be moved apart in a manner that would maximize the spatial frequency at which the first zero appears in the MTF, this thesis studied the use of MTF information from multiple wavelengths to delay the appearance of an interior zero in the overall MTF. This would allow the mirrors to be moved further apart and thereby increase the frequency at which the first zero appears in the MTF, increasing the resolving capability of the system. Symmetrical configurations from three to six mirrors were studied. Each configuration was initially manually optimized at three microns, then the system was studied at a three to five micron range to see if the MTF information from other wavelengths would delay the appearance of an interior zero in the overall system MTF, thus allowing an increase in the distance between mirrors. An optimization routine was also employed to see if there were other, nonsymmetrical, mirror configurations that could possibly yield a better theoretical resolution than their symmetrical counterparts. Keywords: Multiaperture, Synthetic Aperture, Incoherent Imaging. (AW).

Book Optimal Maneuvers for Distributed Aperture Imaging Systems

Download or read book Optimal Maneuvers for Distributed Aperture Imaging Systems written by Danielle Marie Fitch and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in space-borne, distributed multi-aperture interferometric systems is driven by a need for continuously sustained imaging with high resolution. Amplitude interferometry systems measure the Fourier components of the image corresponding to the wave vectors (locations in the so-called u-v plane) that are proportional to the relative positions of the apertures. Imaging to specified resolution demands measurement of the Fourier components with adequate signal-to-noise ratio over the interior of a disk in the u-v plane (the resolution disk). In this paper we concentrate on the case in which interferometric measurements are made while the apertures are changing their relative positions. This work discusses heuristic maneuvers and strategies for a system of two space-borne telescopes to cover the frequency plane while optimizing a cost function that includes both a measure of image quality and propulsive effort. The current study is motivated by previous research in which the optimization problem was formulated and the first-order necessary conditions (FONC) derived. The earlier work obtained short time horizon solutions to the FONC for various simple situations, but the complexity of the integro-differential equations for optimal maneuvering have heretofore prevented solution for an optimal maneuver for the entirety of the imaging process. In place of a direct attack on the FONC, the present work investigates various heuristic approaches to minimizing the cost function in the discretized state and discretized time domains in a hexagonal coordinate system. Using three classes of coverage rules, experimentation with a variety of maneuver strategies involving two apertures has led to a number of time-optimal or fuel-optimal solutions based on the initial conditions of the spacecraft. This thesis shows that an optimal maneuver can be determined from the starting positions of the spacecraft and that a self-spiral class of motion seems to be the most beneficial for long term strategies. Future work may focus on strategies for interferometric systems with more than two apertures and with a finer mesh of the hexagonal coordinate system.

Book Non Iterative Multi aperture and Multi illuminator Phasing for High Resolution Coherent Imaging

Download or read book Non Iterative Multi aperture and Multi illuminator Phasing for High Resolution Coherent Imaging written by Jeffrey Read Kraczek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maximum resolution of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) imaging system is determined by the size of the synthetic aperture. The synthetic aperture is determined by a coordinate shift using the relative positions of the illuminators and receive apertures. Previous methods have shown non-iterative phasing for multiple illuminators with a single receive aperture for intra-aperture synthesis. This work shows non-iterative phasing with both multiple illuminators and multiple receive apertures for inter-aperture synthesis. Simulated results show that piston, tip, and tilt can be calculated using inter-aperture phasing after intra-aperture phasing has been performed. Use of a fourth illuminator for increased resolution is shown. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is used to quantitatively judge increased resolution. The analytic MTF is compared to an "experiment" MTF using the slant edge method. Though experimental proof has been elusive, experimental process has been described as well as some possible reasons why the experiment was unsuccessful.
