Book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors of Arbitrary Shape

Download or read book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors of Arbitrary Shape written by Jiin-Jen Lee and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to investigate the wave induced oscillations in an arbitrary shaped harbor with constant depth which is connected to the open-sea. A theory termed the 'arbitrary shaped harbor' theory is developed. The solution of the Helmholtz equation is formulated as an integral equation; an approximate method is employed to solve the integral equation by converting it to a matrix equation. The final solution is obtained by equating, at the harbor entrance, the wave amplitude and its normal derivative obtained from the solutions for the regions outside and inside the harbor.

Book excerpt: The present study presents a means of computing the response of a rectangular harbor to excitation by incident waves. With the aid of a digital computer, the complete response curve can be computed for any rectangular harbor. The results of experiments on model harbors have confirmed the validity of the computation. Experimental response curves, however, do not show the marked increase of the amplification factor at resonance with a narrowing of the harbor entrance, because of energy dissipation in a model harbor. The analysis of the response factor for waves with a continuous power spectrum also suggests that a narrowing of the entrance will lead to a reduction in the amplitude of long period oscillations in actual harbors, because of increasing sharpness of the response curves and the presence of energy dissipation mechanisms in harbors. In addition to the above resonant characteristics, a study was conducted on the minimum effectiveness of wave absorbers and filters to simulate the open-sea conditions in a wave basin of finite dimensions. A reflection coefficient less than 0.2 is recommended for wave absorbers and filters. The importance of the basin size is also discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Wave induced harbor oscillations were studied. Of primary interest are the response characteristics of a coupled system consisting of a small rectangular harbor connected to a larger rectangular wave basin. This simple model system, devoid of any form of artificial energy dissipators, was studied theoretically and experiment-ALLY TO DETERMINE WITH WHAT DEGREE OF ACCURACY THE ARRANGEMENT COULD PREDICT THE RESONANT MODES OF OSCILLATION FOR A SIMILAR HARBOR CONNECTED TO THE OPEN-SEA. Book excerpt: The study deals with an additional phase of the response characteristics of a rectangular harbor in relation to waves incident on the restricted opening to the 'open sea'. An increase in aspect ratio results in a general decrease of the relative harbor length (ratio of harbor length to wave length) at resonance for the three principal modes of resonance. Maximum amplification inside the harbor in terms of outside wave height, however, depends on the mode of resonance as the aspect ratio changes. The relative harbor length at resonance exhibits the trends predicted by the closed basin expression for variation in aspect ratio, but differs in magnitude and shows certain anomalies not present for the closed basin. Discontinuities for these variations exist at values of the aspect ratio where closed basin theory predicts two possible modes of resonance. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In planning enclosed areas in the ocean, such as offshore harbors for fishing or recreational boats, one has to consider very carefully the problem of forced seiches due to surface water waves. A number of papers have been written on this problem, but to the authors' knowledge, only one of them has treated the case of an artificial bottomless circular harbor in the open ocean, for which the walls extend only part way to the sea floor. C.J.R. Garrett (1970) made a theoretical study of the excitation of waves inside such a harbor for the 'no-entrance' case. The object of this paper is to evaluate experimentally the behavior of the sea surface inside such a harbor, to compare the results with the theoretical values obtained by Garrett, and to extend the observations to the case for which there is an entrance to the harbor.
