Book First order and Second order Theory of Supersonic Flow Past Bodies of Revolution

Download or read book First order and Second order Theory of Supersonic Flow Past Bodies of Revolution written by Milton D. Van Dyke and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods are studied for imporving the existing perturbation theories of axial and inclined supersonic flow past bodies of revolution. For axial flow, a second-order solution is developed using an interation procedure based upon the linearized solution. The resulting second-order problem is reduced to an equivalent first-order problem by discovery of a particular solution. The second-order supersonic flow can then be computed with slight modification of the Karman-Moore procedure. For inclined flow, no particular solution of the second-order equation has been discovered. The second-order solution is derived for a cone, and agrees well with the exact solution. The slender-body series expansion of the second-order solution is found to cause large inaccuracies in both the axial and inclined flows. The conclusion that first-order theory predicts the inclined flow no better than slender-body theory is shown to be erroneous. Non-linearity in lift is shown to result primarily from viscous separation of the crossflow along the after portions of the body. (Author).

Book Flow Over a Slender Body of Revolution at Supersonic Velocities

Download or read book Flow Over a Slender Body of Revolution at Supersonic Velocities written by Robert T. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of small disturbances is applied to the calculation of the pressure distribution and drag of a closed body of revolution traveling at supersonic speeds. It is shown that toward the rear of the body the shape of the pressure distribution is similar to that for subsonic flow. For fineness ratios between 10 and 15 the theoretical wave drag is of the same order as probable values of the frictional drag.

Book Theoretical Studies of Supersonic Two dimensional and Axisymmetric Nonequilibrium Flow Including Calculations of Flow Through a Nozzle

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of Supersonic Two dimensional and Axisymmetric Nonequilibrium Flow Including Calculations of Flow Through a Nozzle written by James Joe Der and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical and vibrational nonequilibrium phenomena in steady inviscid flow fields are studied by the analysis of flow past curved boundaries. Possible alternative choices of the state variables to be used are considered. General features of the nonequilibrium flow are studied by examination of the mathematical properties of the nonlinear flow equations. An axisymmetric nonequilibrium flow of air through a supersonic nozzle is analyzed by means of numerical computations. The coupling effects between nonuniformity (across a nozzle section) and nonequilibrium, not taken into account in the quasi-one-dimensional flow approximation, are revealed by the present analysis.

Book Experimental Investigation of Temperature Recovery Factors on Bodies of Revolution at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Temperature Recovery Factors on Bodies of Revolution at Supersonic Speeds written by William R. Wimbrow and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local temperature recovery factors have been measured on two bodies of revolution at Mach numbers of 2.0 and are shown to be independent of Mach number, Reynolds number, or body shape. The measured recovery factor is well represented by the square root of Prandtl number for laminar boundary layers and by the cube root of Prandtl number for turbulent boundary layers, as predicted by theory.
