Book Dynamic Stability of Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Structures written by George Herrmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Stability of Structures covers the proceedings of an International Conference on Dynamic Stability of Structures, held in Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois on October 18-20, 1965, jointly sponsored by the Air Force of Scientific Research and Northwestern University. The conference aims to delineate the various categories of dynamic stability phenomena. This book is organized into six sections encompassing 20 chapters that tackle general topics such as mathematical methods of analysis, physical phenomena, design applications in engineering, and reports of field research. The first two sections deal with the fundamentals, principles, and concept of dynamic stability, as well as an introduction to the use of computing machines as an aid in studying the motions of complicated dynamical systems. The succeeding two sections highlight the statistical aspects in the structural stability theory and certain problems of structural dynamic. These sections also look into the dynamic buckling of elastic structures and the buckling of long slender ships due to wave-induced whipping. The last two sections explore the stability and vibration problems of mechanical systems under harmonic excitation and the dynamic buckling under step loading. These sections also include discussions on the nonlinear dynamic response of shell-type structures and of a column under random loading, as well as Italian research in the field. Structural and mechanical engineers will find this book invaluable.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics of Continuous Elastic Systems

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics of Continuous Elastic Systems written by Jan Awrejcewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to recent advances in nonlinear dynamics of continuous elastic systems. A major part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of non-homogeneous continua, e.g. plates and shells characterized by sudden changes in their thickness, possessing holes in their bodies or/and edges, made from different materials with diverse dynamical characteristics and complicated boundary conditions. New theoretical and numerical approaches for analyzing the dynamics of such continua are presented, such as the method of added masses and the method of proper orthogonal decomposition. The presented hybrid approach leads to results that cannot be obtained by other standard theories in the field. The demonstrated methods are illustrated by numerous examples of application.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaotic Motions in Feedback Controlled Elastic Systems

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaotic Motions in Feedback Controlled Elastic Systems written by P. J. Holmes and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local and global bifurcation studies of nonlinear systems subject to linear and nonlinear feedback forces have been completed which have application to robotic devices or controlled elastic structures. Related to these studies has been the application of mathematical knot theory to trace certain bifurcation sequences for two-dimensional maps. This work has led to the conclusion that many other routes to chaos in dynamical systems exist besides period doubling when the map is two-dimensional. The use of computer algebra (MACSYMA) has been developed as a tool to study nonlinear systems. In one application the investigators explored a new control scheme for flexible space structures based on controlling the stiffness matrix. MACSYMA was used along with normal form theory to predict the stability properties of a stiffness controlled systems. Other studies using MACSYMA related to problems in robotic dynamics were also completed or started. Finally, experimental work was completed involving the application of mathematics to chaotic motion of flexible structures.

Book Stability of Elastic Structures

Download or read book Stability of Elastic Structures written by N.A. Alfutov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject discussed in this book is the stability of thin-walled elastic systems under static loads. The presentation of these problems is based on modern approaches to elastic-stability theory. Special attention is paid to the formulation of elastic-stability criteria, to the statement of column, plate and shell stability problems, to the derivation of basic relationships, and to a discussion of the boundaries of the application of analytic relationships. The author has tried to avoid arcane, nonstandard problems and elaborate and unexpected solutions, which bring real pleasure to connoisseurs, but confuse students and cause bewilderment to some practical engineers. The author has an apprehension that problems which, though interesting, are limited in application can divert the reader's attention from the more prosaic but no less sophisticated general problems of stability theory.

Book The Stability of Elastic Systems

Download or read book The Stability of Elastic Systems written by S. J. Britvec and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stability of Elastic Systems presents some of the most important aspects of the stability and the non-linear behavior at finite deformations of several types of structural elastic systems, which are important for a more precise understanding of the static performance of such systems. This book is divided into eight chapters that aim to complete parts of classical, eigenvalue, theories of buckling and to demonstrate the important role played by finite deformations in the theoretical analyses of stability. Other chapters discuss the properties of prismatic members and the post-buckling behavior of plane frameworks. A chapter describes the elastic buckling and stability of statically determinate space frameworks. The remaining chapters cover the elastic buckling of statically indeterminate pin-jointed systems and space frameworks. These chapters also examine the non-conservative aspects of structural systems. This book will be of great value to practicing engineers and students.

Book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability

Download or read book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability written by Isaac E Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been stability theories developed for beams, plates and shells — the most significant elements in mechanical, aerospace, ocean and marine engineering. For beams and plates, the theoretical and experimental values of buckling loads are in close vicinity. However for thin shells, the experimental predictions do not conform with the theory, due to presence of small geometric imperfections that are deviations from the ideal shape. This fact has been referred to in the literature as ‘embarrassing’, ‘paradoxical’ and ‘perplexing’. Indeed, the popular adage, “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is”, very much applies to thin shells whose experimental buckling loads may constitute a small fraction of the theoretical prediction based on classical linear theory; because in practice, engineers use knockdown factors that are not theoretically substantiated. This book presents a uniform approach that tames this prima-donna-like and capricious behavior of structures that has been dubbed the ‘imperfection sensitivity’ — thus resolving the conundrum that has occupied the best minds of elastic stability throughout the twentieth century.

Book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability

Download or read book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a structure is put under an increasing compressive load, it becomes unstable and buckling occurs. Buckling is a particularly significant concern in designing shell structures such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, or bridges. This book discusses stability analysis and buckling problems and offers practical tools for dealing with uncertainties that exist in real systems. The techniques are based on two complementary theories which are developed in the text. First, the probabilistic theory of stability is presented, with particular emphasis on reliability. Both theoretical and computational issues are discussed. Secondly, the authors present the alternative to probability based on the notion of 'anti-optimization', a theory that is valid when the necessary information for probabilistic analysis is absent, that is, when only scant data are available. Design engineers, researchers, and graduate students in aerospace, mechanical, marine, and civil engineering who are concerned with issues of structural integrity will find this book a useful reference source.

Book W T Koiter s Elastic Stability of Solids and Structures

Download or read book W T Koiter s Elastic Stability of Solids and Structures written by Arnold M. A. van der Heijden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the elastic stability of solids and structures. It begins with fundamental aspects of stability, relating the basic notions of dynamic stability to more traditional quasi-static approaches. The book is concerned not only with buckling, or linear instability, but most importantly with nonlinear post-buckling behavior and imperfection-sensitivity. After laying out the general theory, Koiter applies the theory to a number of applications, with a chapter devoted to each. These include a variety of beam, plate, and shell structural problems and some basic continuum elasticity problems. Koiter's classic results on the nonlinear buckling and imperfection-sensitivity of cylindrical and spherical shells are included. The treatments of both the fundamental aspects and the applications are completely self contained. This book was recorded as a detailed set of notes by Arnold van der Heijden from W. T. Koiter's last set of lectures on stability theory, at TU Delft.
