Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation of the laminar heat transfer downstream of a sharp convex corner is presented. The flow field in the region of the discontinuity is divided into two parts: the flow field upstream of the discontinuity, obtained from standard viscous and inviscid techniques, and the flow immediately downstream of the sharp discontinuity, obtained by expanding both the supersonic and subsonic flow fields upstream of the discontinuity inviscidly around the corner. Downstream of the discontinuity the flow is represented by a viscous non-similar sublayer which starts at the discontinuity, and by a viscous shear layer at the outer edge which has the inviscid profiles immediately downstream of the discontinuity as initial conditions. The boundary conditions for the viscous sublayer at the outer edge are defined by the shear viscous layer. (Author).

Book excerpt: Wind-tunnel tests of the heat-transfer characteristics for laminar and turbulent boundary layers on a cooled flat plate were conducted at a Mach number of 2.4. Data were obtained for a Reynolds number range of 150.000 to 3,000.000 and for a surface-temperature range of -40 degrees F to 45 degrees F with recovery temperature of the order of 65 degrees F. The temperature-recovery factors agreed well with previous flat-plate reslts. The heat-transfer results were obtained with negative temperature gradients along the surface and, when related to the constant-surface-temperature case, were, in general, in good agreement with theory.

Book excerpt: The flow field in the neighborhood of the discontinuity or a sharp corner is divided into two regions: The flow upstream of the discontinuity which is obtained by standard techniques, and that of downstream which is obtained by standard techniques, and that of downstream which is obtained by expanding both the super sonic and subsonic flow fields upstream of the discontinuity inviscidly around the corner. Downstream of the discontinuity, the flow is represented by a viscous nonsimilar sublayer which starts at the discontinuity, and by a viscous shear layer which has the profiles immediately downstream of the discontinuity as initial conditions. Based upon this flow model, analysis has been developed using the inner and outer expansion techniques. The treatment of the laminar analysis is improved and the technique of application of this model is extended to include turbulent and transitional flow downstream of the corner. Finally, the results are compared with some of the experimental data available in the literature. It is indicated that good agreement was obtained.
