Book Detonation and Two Phase Flow

Download or read book Detonation and Two Phase Flow written by S Penner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 6: Detonation and Two-Phase Flow compiles technical papers presented at the ARS Propellants, Combustion, and Liquid Rockets Conference held in Palm Beach, Florida on April 26-28, 1961. This book provides an excellent illustration of research and development on a selected group of problems relating to detonations, two-phase nozzle flow, and combustion in liquid fuel rocket engines. This volume is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers the entire range of physical conditions under which detonation may be initiated or sustained, such as high explosives, solid propellants, liquid sprays, and gases. Experimental and theoretical studies are also discussed, including the significant progress of the basic phenomena involved in transition from deflagration to detonation, and nature of stable detonations in dilute sprays and other systems. The perennial problems associated with high frequency instabilities in liquid fuel rocket engines are considered in Part 2. This publication is valuable to students and investigators working in the field of propulsion research and development.

Book THE FEASIBILITY OF A ROTATING DETONATION WAVE ROCKET MOTOR

Download or read book THE FEASIBILITY OF A ROTATING DETONATION WAVE ROCKET MOTOR written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rotating detonation wave engine feasibility program is reported. The theoretical studies included the study of the structure of a detonation wave through a two-phase medium has continued emphasizing the droplet shattering mechanism. Utilizing a theoretical relation for a shear-type breakup developed by Dodd, it is concluded that the distance predicted for droplet breakup behind the strong normal shock wave associated with an H2-O2 detonation can be much smaller than experimentally observed distances between the shock and the zone of significant chemical reaction. It is concluded therefore that the droplet shattering effect occurring behind the shock wave can be of extreme importance in substaining a Chapman-Jouguet detonation in dilute sprays. Also reported is the study of the heat transfer to the wall of a rotating detonation wave engine. And the study of an analytical model for the gas dynamics associated with the rotating detonation wave engine.

Book On Liquid Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine Characterization and Performance

Download or read book On Liquid Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine Characterization and Performance written by Vidhan Malik and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current research investigates a next-generation method of combustion called detonations for propulsive applications which has support from the Combustion Services Branch at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) of the Rocket Propulsion Division. The overall initiative seeks to explore the viability of detonation-based systems to augment or replace current rocket propulsion methods in the coming five years. The present work progresses this vision by providing proof of a liquid RP-2 based Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) as well as the fundamentals associated with the physics involved to further the understanding of the phenomenon and its potential uses. Phase one of the research starts with development of a theoretical model based on the Zel’dovich-Neumann-Doring (ZND) detonation model and the well established D2 droplet burning model to establish a droplet sizing parameter for varying detonation wavespeeds. Phase two then documents the interaction of a millimeter droplet colliding with varying supersonic waves where the goal is to document the breakup and transient evolution of the droplet when imparted with the supersonic flow velocity. Phase three consists of characterization of an unlike-doublet impinging injector using Liquid-RP2 and Air to record the incipient spray behavior relative to varying operating conditions of interest. Phase four comprises of the aforementioned spray interacting with a fully developed detonation wave where Schlieren, CH*, Formaldehyde PLIF and Mie scatter were used to archive the reactions that ensues. Finally, phase five consists of testing a RDRE fueled with liquid RP-2 and O2 as the reactants where thrust measurements and back-end imaging analysis of the wavespeeds provide insight into the operation and sustenance of the combustion phenomenon occurring inside the engine.

Book Detonation Control for Propulsion

Download or read book Detonation Control for Propulsion written by Jiun-Ming Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the latest developments in detonation engines for aerospace propulsion, with a focus on the rotating detonation engine (RDE). State-of-the-art research contributions are collected from international leading researchers devoted to the pursuit of controllable detonations for practical detonation propulsion. A system-level design of novel detonation engines, performance analysis, and advanced experimental and numerical methods are covered. In addition, the world’s first successful sled demonstration of a rocket rotating detonation engine system and innovations in the development of a kilohertz pulse detonation engine (PDE) system are reported. Readers will obtain, in a straightforward manner, an understanding of the RDE & PDE design, operation and testing approaches, and further specific integration schemes for diverse applications such as rockets for space propulsion and turbojet/ramjet engines for air-breathing propulsion. Detonation Control for Propulsion: Pulse Detonation and Rotating Detonation Engines provides, with its comprehensive coverage from fundamental detonation science to practical research engineering techniques, a wealth of information for scientists in the field of combustion and propulsion. The volume can also serve as a reference text for faculty and graduate students and interested in shock waves, combustion and propulsion.
