Book excerpt: A compact and easily accessible book, it guides the reader in unravelling the apparent mysteries found in doing mathematical proofs. Simply written, it introduces the art and science of proving mathematical theorems and propositions and equips students with the skill required to tackle the task of proving mathematical assertions. Theoremus - A Student's Guide to Mathematical Proofs is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides a grounding in the notion of mathematical assertions, arguments and fallacies and Part 2, presents lessons learned in action by applying them into the study of logic itself. The book supplies plenty of examples and figures, gives some historical background on personalities that gave rise to the topic and provides reflective problems to try and solve. The author aims to provide the reader with the confidence to take a deep dive into some more advanced work in mathematics or logic.

Book A Primer for Mathematics Competitions

Download or read book A Primer for Mathematics Competitions written by Alexander Zawaira and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of mathematics competitions has been widely recognised for three reasons: they help to develop imaginative capacity and thinking skills whose value far transcends mathematics; they constitute the most effective way of discovering and nurturing mathematical talent; and they provide a means to combat the prevalent false image of mathematics held by high school students, as either a fearsomely difficult or a dull and uncreative subject. This book provides a comprehensive training resource for competitions from local and provincial to national Olympiad level, containing hundreds of diagrams, and graced by many light-hearted cartoons. It features a large collection of what mathematicians call "beautiful" problems - non-routine, provocative, fascinating, and challenging problems, often with elegant solutions. It features careful, systematic exposition of a selection of the most important topics encountered in mathematics competitions, assuming little prior knowledge. Geometry, trigonometry, mathematical induction, inequalities, Diophantine equations, number theory, sequences and series, the binomial theorem, and combinatorics - are all developed in a gentle but lively manner, liberally illustrated with examples, and consistently motivated by attractive "appetiser" problems, whose solution appears after the relevant theory has been expounded. Each chapter is presented as a "toolchest" of instruments designed for cracking the problems collected at the end of the chapter. Other topics, such as algebra, co-ordinate geometry, functional equations and probability, are introduced and elucidated in the posing and solving of the large collection of miscellaneous problems in the final toolchest. An unusual feature of this book is the attention paid throughout to the history of mathematics - the origins of the ideas, the terminology and some of the problems, and the celebration of mathematics as a multicultural, cooperative human achievement. As a bonus the aspiring "mathlete" may encounter, in the most enjoyable way possible, many of the topics that form the core of the standard school curriculum.

  • Author : Keith Devlin
  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 1996-12-15

Download or read book Mathematics written by Keith Devlin and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1996-12-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people, mathematics means working with numbers. But as Keith Devlin shows in Mathematics: The Science of Patterns, this definition has been out of date for nearly 2,500 years. Mathematicians now see their work as the study of patterns—real or imagined, visual or mental, arising from the natural world or from within the human mind. Using this basic definition as his central theme, Devlin explores the patterns of counting, measuring, reasoning, motion, shape, position, and prediction, revealing the powerful influence mathematics has over our perception of reality. Interweaving historical highlights and current developments, and using a minimum of formulas, Devlin celebrates the precision, purity, and elegance of mathematics.

Book Hewitt Nachbin Spaces

Download or read book Hewitt Nachbin Spaces written by Maurice D. Weir and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-Holland Mathematics Studies: Hewitt-Nachbin Spaces exposes the theory of Hewitt-Nachbin spaces, also called realcompact or Q-spaces, taking into account synergistic points of view from which these spaces are investigated. The publication first offers information on embedding in topological products and Hewitt-Nachbin spaces and convergence, including notation and terminology, embedding lemma, E-completely regular spaces, E-compact spaces, and characterizations and properties of Hewitt-Nachbin spaces. The text also touches on Hewitt-Nachbin spaces, uniformities, and related topological spaces, as well as Hewitt-Nachbin completeness and uniform spaces, review of uniform spaces, and almost realcompact and cb-spaces. The book takes a look at Hewitt-Nachbin completeness and continuous mappings. Discussions focus on classes of mappings, perfect mappings, WZ mappings, closed mappings and Hewitt-Nachbin spaces, and E-perfect mappings. The manuscript is a reliable reference for readers interested in Hewitt-Nachbin spaces.
