Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 Actual term barit, as certain all too naive critics seem to imagine (for a discussion of the avoidance of the word by many of the prophets, cf. E.g. Pp. 51 but the fact that every expression of the OT which is determinative for its faith rests on the explicit or implicit assumption that a free act of God, consummated in history, has raised Israel to the rank of the People of God, in whom the nature and will of God are to be revealed. The word 'covenant', therefore, is so to speak a convenient symbol for an assurance much wider in scope and controlling the formation of the national faith at its deepest level, without which Israel would not be Israel. As an epitome of the deal ings of God in history the 'covenant' is not a doctrinal concept, with the help of which a complete corpus of dogma can be worked out, but the characteristic description of a living process, which was begun at a particular time and at a particular place, in order to reveal a divine reality unique in the whole history of religion. Reference to this living process in every single paragraph of this work will not escape the attentive reader. It seems to have at first attracted little attention even in Europe, owing probably to the fact that it was written in French and published in Paris. Schultz, who mentions a smaller work by Kayser of the same date, had evidently overlooked this one, when, in 1888, he issued the last edition of his Theologie. The book was first brought to the notice of Americans by the Presbyterian Quarterly, in 1888. The review of it then published was very favorable. In fact, the reviewer said of it: On the whole, we regard it as the best Theology of the Old Testa ment that has yet been published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: The Religion of Revelation in Its Pre-Christian Stage of Development The work of Dr. Hermann Schultz on Old Testament Theology has long been a standard authority on the important subject of which it treats. The author is one of the most accomplished exponents of that school of theological thought which is at present dominant in Germany. He stands high in the esteem of all parties; and it is thought by many that he has succeeded in discovering the via media between the positions of Biblical scholars like Delitzsch on the one hand and Stade on the other. Biblical theology is a subject certain to receive in the immediate future from the Christian public, both of Great Britain and America, a steadily increasing share of attention. One of the characteristics of the age is the emphasis with which the Christian Churches are declaring that it is their duty as well as their privilege to interpret Scripture in the full light of present-day research. Hence the growing anxiety to know what the books of the Bible actually teach. It is this question which Dr. Schultz has undertaken to answer, from the historical point of view, in so far as the Old Testament is concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 Bleek's Introduction to the Old Testament which is here for the first time presented in an English dress, has been long and favourably known to Biblical students as, perhaps, the most complete and trustworthy of the works which, under the same title, and professing the same oh jects, have appeared with such rapidity in Germany during the last quarter of a century. Many as these so-called Introductions are, and various their degrees of excel lence, this of Bleek's deserves to be specially commended for the union of the qualities most essential to the character of such a work: thorough acquaintance with every depart ment of the subject, breadth of view, honesty and fairness of treatment, quickness of perception of the main points at issue, calmness of judgment, and, above all, deep reverence for Holy Scripture as the Revelation of the Mind and Will of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, Vol. 1: True From the Beginning Many persons who believe that the future punishment of the ungodly will either end in annihilation, or be without end, will yet allow that there are some passages of Scripture which do not readily harmonize with either Of these theories. It is needless to quote isolated texts to justify such admission. Far more important is it to examine some Scriptural principles, not dependent on one or more detached texts, but which enter into the very substance of Scripture, which possess sys tematic strength and completeness, and which are nevertheless Opposed to the alternative theories just mentioned. Four such principles may here be stated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 Among the questions which have stood most prominent before the minds of men deeply interested in religious matters during the latter part of the nineteenth century are to be reckoned those which appertain to a Special Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament. Such problems as refer to the Authorship, Purpose, Date, Literary Structure, Historical Value, etc., of each book contained in the first part of the Bible have appealed powerfully to Biblical students, and hardly less so to the attentive readers of the numerous books or periodicals wherein they are oftentimes discussed, oftener still alluded to. It was only natural, therefore, that after the questions which are common to the writings of both the Old and the New Testament had been treated in a "General Introduction to the Holy Scriptures," those which concern especially the books of the Old Testament should be next studied in a "Special Introduction" to that first part of the Sacred Volume. While, however, the work was being prepared for the press, the conviction was gradually forced upon the writer that, to give to each question the developments it naturally demanded, more than one volume would be necessary for the study of all the books of the Old Testament.
