Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology Explained and Defended, Vol. 2 of 4: In a Series of Sermons Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God; that these are Three in one sense, and One in another. The sense in which the are three, and yet one, we do not, and cannot, under stand. Till we understand the fact; and on this fact depend the truth, and meaning, of the whole Scriptural system. If Christ be God, he is also a Saviour; if not, there is no intelligible sense, in which he can sustain this title, or the character which it denotes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology, Vol. 2 of 4: Explained and Defended, in a Series of Sermons Amon the various denominations of men, denoted in the text I) the wise, whose reasonings are vain, are included, so far as I can discern, the Arians and Socinians or, as both sometimes choose to term themselves, Unitarians. I feel myself obli ed to warn my audience, that this name however, contains in itsel an error; and appears to have been formed with a design to deceive. It was professedly assumed for the purpose of challenging to those, who assumed it, the exclusive character, among Christians, of believi in the Unity of God; and of denying particularl that Trinitari ans entertain this belief: whereas Trmztari'ans believe in the Unity of God as entirely, and absolutely, as their opposers. That every Trinitarian asserts this of himself, every Unitarian, ossessing a very moderate share of information, knows; and he iinows also, that the char e of admitting more Gods than one cannot be fasten ed u n the Trinitarian; exce t by consequences, professedly de riv from his doctrine, whic he utterly disclaims. To prove, that such consequences do indeed follow from it, is, if it can be done, altogether fair, and unob'ectionable; but to charge him with admitting them, while he utteriy disclaims them, is unworthy of a dis utant, assuming the character of a Christian. For the assertion, which I have made above, concerning the Uni tarians, generally, I am bound to give my reasons. This I intend to do Without disguise, or softening; but at the same time with moderation and candour. My observations I shall distribute un der two heads: Answers to the Ob ections of the Unitarians against the doctrine of the Trinit and bjections to the Doctrine of Uni tarians, and to their Conditct in managing the controversy. It will not be supposed, that under either of these heads very numerous, or very minute, articles can find a (place in such a system of dis courses. All, that can be attem te is to exhibit a summary view of such particulars, as are plain y'of serious importance. Book Understanding Hebrew Idiomatic Figurative Language

Download or read book Understanding Hebrew Idiomatic Figurative Language written by and published by Troy Edwards. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God hate certain people or does He love everyone? Is He jealous of anyone? Does He struggle with anger? Is He looking for people to be terrified of Him? Is He self-centered and vindictive? Can He be provoked easily? Does He lead people astray? Is He punishing children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for the sins of their forefathers? Some argue that the Bible teaches that God is the one who accomplishes all of this. Sadly, some have reached these incorrect conclusions because they were unable to appreciate the figurative and idiomatic language of Scripture. This book, “Understanding Hebrew Idiomatic & Figurative Language,” teaches us how portrayals of God, when examined from the perspective of the Ancient Near Eastern culture from which Scripture was written, give us a truly stunning image of the God who is exactly like Jesus.

Book Retaining the Old Episcopal Divinity

Download or read book Retaining the Old Episcopal Divinity written by Jake Griesel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Edwards of Cambridge (1637-1716) has typically been portrayed as a marginalized 'Calvinist' in an overwhelmingly 'Arminian' later Stuart Church of England. In Retaining the Old Episcopal Divinity, Jake Griesel challenges this depiction of Edwards and the theological climate of his contemporary Church. Griesel demonstrates that Edwards was recognized in his own day and the immediately following generations as one of the preeminent conforming divines of the period, who featured prominently in notable theological controversies concerning contemporaries such as John Locke, Gilbert Burnet, Daniel Whitby, William Whiston, and Samuel Clarke. Despite some Arminian opposition, Edwards' theological works are shown to have enjoyed a warm reception among sizable segments of the established Church's clergy, many of whom shared his Reformed convictions. Instead of a theological misfit, this study contends that the anti-Arminian Edwards was a decidedly mainstream churchman. Griesel's reassessment has ramifications far beyond the figure of Edwards, however, and ultimately serves as a prism through which to visualize with much greater clarity the broader theological landscape of the later Stuart Church of England, and particularly the place of Reformed orthodoxy within it. It substantially develops recent research on the persisting vitality of Reformed theology within the post-Restoration Church by demonstrating to an unprecedented extent the sheer strength and numbers of conforming Reformed divines between the Restoration and the evangelical revivals. Finally, Griesel problematizes the idea that the post-Restoration Church developed a fairly homogeneous 'Anglican' identity, and argues instead that the Church in this period was theologically and ecclesio-politically variegated"--

Book Reformed Systematic Theology Volume 2

Download or read book Reformed Systematic Theology Volume 2 written by Joel Beeke and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 1211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multivolume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach. In this volume, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley shift from the doctrine of God (theology proper) to the doctrine of humanity (anthropology) and the doctrine of Christ (Christology). This extensive reformed theology explores the Bible's teaching about who we are and why we were created, as well as who Jesus is and why his divinity is essential to the Christian faith.
