Download or read book Theodor Storm s Craft of Fiction written by Clifford A. Bernd and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernd's study shows how Storm's Novellen are made purposeful by the operations of a fictional intelligence, haunted by the fear of passing time. The author challenges the traditional belief that Storm's narratives are products of a sentimental mind. No other discussion of Storm's tales, be it analysis of an individual narrative or collective treatment of several or all of them, seeks to interpret them with such specific emphasis upon their fictional, omniscient narrator. This concentration on the fictional narrator also leads into a study of Storm's subjective narrative form.

It highlights his critique of Christianity, his vision of capitalism and his analysis of class relationships. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprises papers from the International Conference on [title] held Nov. 1988, London, UK on economics, planning, environmental impact, safety, control, generators. Acidic paper; no index. Holub (German, U. of California, Berkeley) contends that realism is not primarily a textual property, but a matter of reception, and reexamines 19th-century German literary realism by considering traditionally representative texts--novellas and novels--from the perspective of effects on readers. Download or read book Gypsies and Orientalism in German Literature and Anthropology of the Long Nineteenth Century written by Nicholas Saul and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparently nomadic diaspora nation of Indian provenance, the Gypsies are present with notable frequency in Germanic literatures from Wolzogen and Brentano to Stifter, Keller, Storm, Raabe, Jensen, Saar and Thomas Mann. Against the background of the still officially unacknowledged Romany Holocaust, Saul analyses in a series of close interpretations the stations of the literary construction of the Gypsy prior to the human disaster. The book's synthesis of scholarship in cultural, social and institutional history, the history of ideas and literary history will appeal to the scholarly community across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and will also serve as a valuable introduction for students from diverse fields.
Download or read book Theodor Storm written by Clifford A. Bernd and published by North American Studies in Nineteenth-Century German Literature and Culture. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new understanding of the nineteenth-century German author Theodor Storm, taking seriously, for the first time, the heritage of the Danish muse in his life and major works. Bernd offers a Dano-German portrait of Storm, tracing the youth of the author in the bicultural borderland of Schleswig, where Storm lived under a succession of Danish monarchs until he was 36 years old, and learned to refer to the German states as Ausland (foreign territory). Highlighting the German nationalism that has prevented previous biographers, beginning with Storm's own daughter, from drawing attention to the importance of Danish culture and literature in forming the author, Bernd then details Storm's education and reading in the Danish language and literature, showing how he added a distinct Danish tone to his German poetry and also refashioned the German novella in the manner of Danish practitioners, and thus became a unique representative of a Danish literature situated in the German-speaking world. These achievements, inflected by transnational influence, should now help us to recognize Storm as a figure of exceptional importance in European letters.

Download or read book The Role of the Painting in the Works of Theodor Storm written by David L. Dysart and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodor Storm (1917-1888) remains one of the most widely read authors of German Poetic Realism. His profound contribution to the Novella has been acknowledged and increased academic interest has concentrated on the true artistry of his narrative skills. One of Storm's most notable literary devices is the fictional depiction of paintings. The pervasiveness of such paintings in his works indicates a conscious use of this medium to achieve specific artistic effects on both the structural and symbolic level. This careful analysis of the role of the painting clearly illustrates the craftsmanship of Storm's narrative art and provides an appreciation of the symbolic qualities of his work.
