Book excerpt: As more and more music literature is published each year, librarians, scholars, and bibliographers are turning to music bibliography to retain control over the flood of information. Based on the Conference of Music Bibliography, this timely book provides vital information on the most important aspects of the scholarly practice of music bibliography. Foundations in Music Bibliography provides librarians with great insight into bibliographic issues they face every day including bibliographic control of primary and secondary sources, the emergence of enumerative and analytical bibliography, bibliographic instruction, and bibliographic lacunae. Some of the fascinating topics covered by Foundations in Music Bibliography include: the history of thematic catalogs indexing Gregorian chant manuscripts general principles of bibliographic instruction analyses of Debussy discographies musical ephemera and their importance in various types of musicological research bibliographical lacunae (i.e. lack of access to visual sources, failure to control primary sources, and lack of communication with the rest of the performing arts) Foundations in Music Bibliography shows librarians how bibliography can be used to help music students and researchers find the information they need among the innumerable available sources. Book Historical Bibliography as an Essential Source for Historiography

Download or read book Historical Bibliography as an Essential Source for Historiography written by Bernadette Cunningham and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers presented at the Fifth International Conference of the European Historical Bibliographies Project, held in Prague on November 7 - 8, 2013, under the auspices of the Department of Historical Bibliography of the Institute of History of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic. The conference attracted bibliographers, historians and librarians from Denmark, France, Ireland, Lithuania, Germany, Switzerland and from a number of Czech institutions and libraries, who gathered to discuss a wide range of topics. The main theme of the conference was the significance of historical bibliography for historical science. Given the diversity of professional focus among the conference participants, this topic was approached and examined from a variety of viewpoints. The most important outcomes of these meetings were, firstly, explaining the way individual participating organisations dealt with historical bibliography, and, secondly, providing a comparison of different methodological and technological approaches for processing specialized bibliographies in various European countries. This book introduces the wider public to the current shape and prospects of historical bibliography projects across a range of European countries. Obviously, such projects must reflect the needs of their users, which mainly comprise historians and librarians. The ongoing development of historical bibliography does not only involve a technical challenge, but also a methodological one, as well as a societal one when interpreted in a broader context. Mutual communication helps form the future direction of historical bibliography, which will undoubtedly face many new tasks and challenges.

Book Genre Analysis and Corpus Design

Download or read book Genre Analysis and Corpus Design written by Ulrike Henny-Krahmer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work in the field of digital literary stylistics and computational literary studies is concerned with theoretical concerns of literary genre, with the design of a corpus of nineteenth-century Spanish-American novels, and with its empirical analysis in terms of subgenres of the novel. The digital text corpus consists of 256 Argentine, Cuban, and Mexican novels from the period between 1830 and 1910. It has been created with the goal to analyze thematic subgenres and literary currents that were represented in numerous novels in the nineteenth century by means of computational text categorization methods. To categorize the texts, statistical classification and a family resemblance analysis relying on network analysis are used with the aim to examine how the subgenres, which are understood as communicative, conventional phenomena, can be captured on the stylistic, textual level of the novels that participate in them.

Book excerpt: This is Volume I of a monumental two-volume work, a historical record and guide to bibliographic efforts on all the languages of the world, which is designed to serve the professional as well as non-professional reader as a first point of entry for information about any language. By consulting the Bibliography, the reader will quickly be able to identify specific bibliographic sources for particular topics of interest, and thus rapidly begin to narrow the search for information. Volume I, with nearly 2500 entries in 400 pages, covers the Indo-European languages of Europe, plus Etruscan and Basque, as well as general and multi-language references, including sections on dictionaries, dissertations, and specialized topics. Volume II, with approximately the same number of entries, will cover all other languages. In the Bibliography, most entries are annotated to indicate the number of items in each bibliography and how they are arranged; some information on the scope and coverage of the work (where not obvious from the title); whether items are annotated; and what indexes are included.
