Book excerpt: Annie: I've been the good girl too long. I don't drink, don't smoke, and live at home with my preacher father. The most daring thing I've ever done is work part-time at the library. Rule-breakers and lawless men aren't part of my world but not doing doesn't mean I haven't thought about it. And every fantasy I've ever had is promising to come true if I just take a chance. Easy: The moment I laid eyes on Annie, I knew she was the one for me and Michigan. We've been partners ever since we served and now we do everything together. And by everything I mean riding, drinking, and women. If we can get Annie on board, it'll be perfect. Not only do I have to convince Annie, though, I need to convince Michigan, too. Michigan: Easy seems to think sweet, delectable Annie's just going to fall into our laps. But my one experience with a preacher's daughter left me scarred-emotionally and physically. A good girl like Annie wants to experience a little danger but she doesn't want to live it and I'm not going all in unless this is for the long haul. Three hearts are on a collision course. They will either be ruined or remade. In the small town of Fortune, the Death Lords rule the roads. Come along for the ride.

Book Private Needs Public Selves

Download or read book Private Needs Public Selves written by John K. Roth and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polls through the '90s show that many Americans believe the nation is in a period of spiritual decline, yet public religious display and discussion often is deemed politically incorrect. Philosopher John K. Roth feels that more outward sharing of religious beliefs, thoughts, and ideas would bridge the gap between our private needs and our public selves--and would give Americans of differing faiths a common identity.

Book Public Needs and Private Pleasures

Download or read book Public Needs and Private Pleasures written by Rabun M. Taylor and published by L'ERMA di BRETSCHNEIDER. This book was released on 2000 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A meticuously detailed investigation of Rome's practical solution to the problems of providing and distributing the city's water supply between the end of the Republic and Trajan's reign. Taylor's principal aims are to determine where and why aqueduct systems crossed the Tiber and to assess the function of the enigmatic Aqua Alsietia. An initial discussion of the technical and legal context for aqueduct planning is followed by a topographical inquiry into several specific aqueducts including the four earliest aqueduct river crossings: the Aqua Appia, Anio Velus, Aqua Marcia and the Aqua Virgo. Taylor also examines the expansion and organisation of water supply within the Transiberim, a heavily populated district of Rome to the west of the Tiber, and assesses its influence on Rome's wider urban policy.

Book Private Learning Public Needs

Download or read book Private Learning Public Needs written by Eric J. Weiner and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication "Private Learning, Public Needs" looks at the devastating effects neoliberal globalization continues to have on education, schooling, and literacy development in the United States. The book is divided in three parts. Part I "Neoliberal Globalization and the Question of Adult Literacy Education" is broken into two chapers. Chapter one is a study of neoleberalism and its relationship to globalization. Specially, the changing role of the state is examined in terms that bring attention to globalization's capacity to ignore nation-state borders, especially in the context of finance and culture. The role of the state is discussed in light of its influcence on local agencies and on local instiutions. Of issue is the interiorization of neoliberal globalization at the material levels of educaional life, namely curriculum standard and development. Through the imposition of certain kinds of standards, teacher education programs must make some hard decisions about wheter they will, on the one hand, satisfy the needs manufactured by neolibral interests as they manifest themelves in curricular and pedagogic mandates, or, on the other, will use their autority to challenge and confront that which they know is detrimental to democratic principles and good teaching practices. Chapter two examines how neoliberal interests have impeded the goals of adult literacy education. Part II "The Work of Critical Theory in a Neoliberal Age" takes up the work of two prominent cirtical theorists in and beyond education: Erich Fromm and Paulo Freire. Chapter three discusses Fromm's important alternative to top-down discourses of power and authority. In chapter four, Freire's work in Sâo Paulo as Secretry of Education is studied for what it can teach us about the importance an possibility of structural transformations.
