Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 4: A Monthly Review of the Drama, Music, and the Fine Arts; July to December, 1884 The best of these, undoubtedly, was Mdlle. Plessy, who became Madame Arnould by her marriage with the dramatist of that name, and after quitting the Thefitre Francais for a ten years' engagement at St. Petersburg, ultimately returned thither in I8 5 3. Endowed with considerable personal attractions and a more than average share of dramatic intelligence, She had, more over, acquired by patient study a perfection of elocution and a graceful deportment which neither of her colleagues, Mdlle. Denain or Madeleine Brohan, can fairly be said to have possessed no one could play the coquettes of Marivaux with more refined elegance, the delicate raillery of that ultra-artificial writer exactly suiting what Dickens aptly terms her mechanical ingenuousness but she never completely realized my idea of the great heroines of Moliere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Oscar Wilde, Vol. 4 About in various fragmentary states, and it was perfectly obvious that someone familiar with the author's writing had been there before us. A few days later an execution was put into the house on a judgment obtained by a creditor, and this was followed by one of the most disgraceful auctions that ever occurred in London. Not many personal friends were present, as all the money they could afford was being devoted to his defence. Private letters and mss. Were dispersed, though I believe the sale of such things under the circumstances was illegal; and private collectors who were anxious to buy any of the pictures, works of art, or literary relics (of which Wilde possessed a certain number) were hustled by the dealers. An eye-witness informs me that he saw a great many small objects being pocketed by the crowd. For many years afterwards the second-hand shops were full of objects from the sale. Book The Works of Moli re Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Moli re Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Molière Molière and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Moliere, Vol. 4 Boursault believed, or affected to believe, that Moliere intended to portray him, and hence replied in the Portrait o'zc Peiiztre which was performed at the hotel de Bourgogne. Tradition mentions that the Duke de la Feuillade took other means to avenge himself. He one day met Moliere in one of the galleries of the Palace of Versailles. Pretending to be very polite and courteous he ran towards him smiling, and whilst embracing him, and rubbing all the while the actor's face against the metal-worked buttons of his coat, he shouted out, Cream - tart, Moliere! Cream-tart It is said that Louis XIV. Banished the Duke from the Court for some time for this offense, and that he ordered Moliere to take anew vengeance upon his enemies. There can be no doubt about the order, for Moliere states so expressly in T/ze fi/ipro ipt/c of Versailles. The School for Wives criticised may be taken as Moliere's general reply to his critics; for it deals as much with the points of good and bad criticism as with the special features of T/ze Sc/zoo! For Wives. Indeed, the defense raised, through the mouth of Dorante, of certain passages of the latter plav which had been roughly handled by the poet's con temporaries, are perhaps the weakest parts of le Sc/zool for Wit/es criticised; whereas the generalities which deal with the art and practice of criticism are exceptionally shrewd and pungent.
