Book excerpt: The Zuni Mountains have over 360,000 acres of pristine wilderness. The volcanic area of the El Malpais National Monument is riddled with great, black lava flows, caves, and lava tubes. The El Morro National Monument has writings from ancient peoples flowing backward into time, early Spanish explorers, and later American explorers near a precious pool of deep water hidden beneath towering cliffs. Throughout Plateaus, mesas. cliffs, canyons, and small mountain peaks is the pygmy forest of piñon and juniper trees interspersed with pines and towering Ponderosa pines with their red bark and straight trunks. The continental divide rises and falls as it winds its way north to the great Rocky Mountains. A polygot of peoples, Zuni, Pueblo, Navajo, Spanish, and the various ethnicities of Anglos make the Zuni Mountains home. Not all of the poems in this anthology are about the Zuni Mountains. The poets come from different places and different cultures, but the Zuni Mountains are in all the poems in this volume. Some of the poems capture the beauty of New Mexico sunlight that enlightens the human spirit in a way that sunlight in other places does not. Some are caught up by the mourning, laughter, sadness, comedy, tragedy, and endless stories that arise out of individuals living individual lives. Zuni Mountain country is not always an easy country. The trails through ancient volcanic flows frozen into black stone can challenge the most experienced hiker. You can be walking along a ridge and suddenly become aware that a mountain lion is watching you from a sandstone outcropping above your head. But it is a beautiful, wild place where horses can still find grass in green summer meadows and elk and antelope grace Mother Earth with the fluidity of movement and magnificence of the elk's rack of horns. The poetry in this volume arises from the Zuni Mountains, and, as such, is as dynamic, interesting, and beautiful as the country from which it comes.

Five years older than Brandon, Darren is the rebel of the brothers, and throughout their lives they compete with each other on various levels. Brandon is the model preacher´s kid until he goes away to college. There Brandon does everything Darren did at fifteen and then some. Before the school year is over, Brandon is arrested at a gay bar for a false I.D., and his parents discover he is gay. Brandon moves home. Meanwhile Darren has married a church woman and set out on his goal of becoming wealthy through real estate. His marriage is short and unhappy, and not long after its breakup, Darren himself starts having sex with other men. Despite a six-year relationship with a male lover, Darren hides his sexual orientation. After going away to graduate school in New Mexico in the early 1970s, Brandon moves back to California, lives briefly with Darren and his lover, teaches at local colleges, and works on his painting and drawing, continuing his longstanding pattern of heavy drinking. When Darren´s relationship ends, he moves in with Brandon for eleven months. Then Darren buys yet another house, lives in it alone, and soon disappears. Darren´s disappearance stuns the family, especially since it apparently results from foul play. When Darren´s stripped car is discovered, the evidence of foul play is inescapable. Brandon does what he can to find Darren, including posting fliers at bars Darren frequented, among them the Hollywood leather bars, and placing an article in a gay magazine. Brandon decides he must tell the police Darren was gay, but instead of helping the investigation as Brandon had hoped, the police become even more indifferent. The elder Taylors find out about Darren too, and they tell Brandon a local TV station backed off from covering Darren´s disappearance after it discovered Darren was gay. Bitter, angry, and grief-stricken, Brandon tries to cope through his art and his drinking. Although he meets Cary, his first lover in five years, Brandon´s drinking gets worse. Eventually, he stops drinking, breaks up with Cary, and begins a new life.

They are placed in approximate chronological order, and range from about the year AD 670. Perhaps what strikes one most in connection with the Hyaku-nin-isshiu is the date when the verses were written; most of them were produced before the time of the Norman Conquest (AD 1066), and one cannot but be struck with the advanced state of art and culture in Japan at a time when Europe was still in a very elementary stage of civilization. The Collection consists almost entirely of love-poems and what the editor calls picture-poems, intended to bring before the mind's eye some well-known scene in nature; and it is marvellous what effect little thumbnail sketches are compressed within thirty-one syllables. Some show the cherry blossoms which are doomed to fall, the dewdrops scattered by the wind, the mournful cry of the wild deer on the mountains, the dying crimson of the fallen maple leaves, the weird sadness of the cuckoo singing in the moonlight, and the loneliness of the recluse in the mountain wilds; while those verses which appear to be of a more cheerful type are rather of the nature of the 'Japanese smile', described by Lafcadio Hearn as a mask to hide the real feelings. Japanese poetry differs very largely from anything we are used to in the West. It has no rhyme or alliteration, and little, if any, rhythm, as we understand it. The verses in this Collection are all what are called Tanka which has five lines and thirty-one syllables, arranged thus: 5-7-5-7-7 which is an unusual metre for Western ears. For this translation the editor has adopted a five-lined verse of 8-6-8-6-6 metre, with the second, fourth, and fifth lines rhyming, in the hope of retaining at least some resemblance to the original form, while at the same time making the sound more familiar to English readers.
