And is the grocer most comfortable resting on a bed of lettuce? No matter what the bed or walls look like, when the day's activities are done, it's time for everyone, big or small, to go to sleep. Florida, Manhattan and California are under water. Everything south of Bolivia is hounded by cloned dire wolves as big as bears. Psychedelic breastmilk is the drug pandemic of the day. And in Haiti, an escaped enemy of the state plots an overthrow.... It's April of 2165, and the Republic of Panamerica is about to secure their interstellar Manifest Destiny. Five moons some twenty lightyears away have been discovered, yet as Panamerica goes through the final preparations to launch, Kayla Zimmer, a former inmate in a secret prison camp, has an agenda of her own. El Presidente and his continental banana republic would have this day go down in history, and it's about the one thing Zimmer agrees with him on. This is their proudest moment, and the time for her revenge....

Download or read book Dancing to Almendra written by Mayra Montero and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2007-05-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havana, 1957. On the same day that the Mafia capo Umberto Anastasia is assassinated in a barber's chair in New York, a hippopotamus escapes from the Havana zoo and is shot and killed by its pursuers. Assigned to cover the zoo story, Joaquín Porrata, a young Cuban journalist, instead finds himself embroiled in the mysterious connections between the hippo's death and the mobster's when a secretive zookeeper whispers to him that he "knows too much." In exchange for a promise to introduce the keeper to his idol, the film star George Raft, now the host of the Capri Casino, Joaquín gets information that ensnares him in an ever-thickening plot of murder, mobsters, and, finally, love. The love story is, of course, another mystery. Told by Yolanda, a beautiful ex-circus performer now working for the famed cabaret San Souci, it interleaves through Joaquín's underworld investigations, eventually revealing a family secret deeper even than Havana's brilliantly evoked enigmas. In Dancing to "Almendra," Mayra Montero has created an ardent and thrilling tale of innocence lost, of Havana's secret world that is "the basis for the clamor of the city," and of the end of a violent era of fantastic characters and extravagant crimes. Based on the true history of a bewitching city and its denizens, Almendra is the latest "triumph" (Library Journal) from one of Latin America's most impassioned and intoxicating voices.

Download or read book Crimesploitation written by Daniel LaChance and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Due to the graphic nature of this program, viewer discretion is advised." Most of us have encountered this warning while watching television at some point. It is typically attached to a brand of reality crime TV that Paul Kaplan and Daniel LaChance call "crimesploitation": spectacles designed to entertain mass audiences by exhibiting "real" criminal behavior and its consequences. This book examines their enduring popularity in American culture. Analyzing the structure and content of several popular crimesploitation shows, including Cops, Dog: The Bounty Hunter, and To Catch a Predator, as well as newer examples like Making a Murderer and Don't F**K with Cats, Kaplan and LaChance highlight the troubling nature of the genre: though it presents itself as ethical and righteous, its entertainment value hinges upon suffering. Viewers can imagine themselves as deviant and ungovernable like the criminals in the show, thereby escaping a law-abiding lifestyle. Alternatively, they can identify with law enforcement officials, exercising violence, control, and "justice" on criminal others. Crimesploitation offers a sobering look at the depictions of criminals, policing, and punishment in modern America.
