Book The Zoo is Closed Today

Download or read book The Zoo is Closed Today written by Evelyn L. Beilenson and published by Peter Pauper Press Incorporated. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " It was a warm sunny day with not much to do. So Sue and John walked to the Kalamazoo. But when John and Sue arrive at the zoo, they are in for a big surprise! What is wrong with all of the animals? From Edward the elephant to Marcel the monkey, the animals have tummy aches and toothaches, runny noses and sore throats. Pete the zookeeper can barely keep up with taking care of them and has to close the zoo. And the next day, John and Sue are in for an even bigger surprise! This charming tale, illustrated with humor and warmth, demonstrates the value of sweet friendship. Reviews: SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL "K-Gr 2-Following in the footsteps of many other successful 'something's wrong at the zoo' stories, this rhyming version comically describes the ailments of the animals that Sue and John find when they walk to 'Kalama Zoo.' Their friend Pete the zookeeper explains that the zoo is closed because Edward the elephant has a cold in his nose, Freddy the fox has a sunburn, Marcel the monkey's tail is in a sling, and Carlos the camel has hives on his humps. The kids return home disappointed and concerned but are gleeful to receive a letter the very next day telling them that the animals are feeling better. When the two come down with the sniffles themselves, the animals make a get-well road trip to their house. Kennedy's colorful cartoons perfectly complement Beilenson's easy read-aloud verse. Pair it with E.S. Redmond's Felicity Floo Visits the Zoo (Candlewick, 2009) and Philip C. Stead's A Sick Day for Amos McGee (Roaring Brook, 2010) for an ailing animal storytime or book display." -Jenna Boles, Green County Public Library, Beavercreek, OH MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW "A delightful, expressively illustrated humorous narrative verse story about children, friendship, and animals having a sick day at the zoo. . . . [an] imaginative animal tale that teaches children the value of friends who truly care about you, even when you are sick. It is ideal for audiences ages 5 and up." Today, these institutions are at a new milestone in their history. This second edition of Zoo and Aquarium History takes the reader on a journey through the transition of private collections to menageries, to zoos, then zoological gardens, and more recently conservation centers and sanctuaries. Under the direction of Vernon N. Kisling, an expert in zoo history, an international team of authors has thoroughly updated the only comprehensive, global history of animal collections, menageries, zoos, and aquariums. The resulting book documents the continuum of efforts in maintaining wild animal collections from ancient civilizations through today, explaining how modern zoos have developed their mission statements around the core aims of conservation, education, research and recreation. This new edition pulls together regional information, including new chapters on zoological gardens of Canada, Latin America, China, Israel, the Middle East, and New Zealand, along with the cultural aspects of each region to provide a foundation upon which further research can be based. It presents a chronological listing of the world's zoos and aquariums and features many never-before published photographs. Sidebars present supplementary information on pertinent personalities, events, and wildlife conservation issues. The original Appendix has been expanded to include over 1,200 zoos and aquariums, providing an invaluable resource. This is an extensive, chronological introduction to the subject, highlighting the published and archival resources for those who want to know more.

Book Zoo Nebraska

Download or read book Zoo Nebraska written by Carson Vaughan and published by Little A. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resonant true story of small-town politics and community perseverance and of decent people and questionable choices, Zoo Nebraska is a timely requiem for a rural America in the throes of extinction. Royal, Nebraska, population eighty-one--where the church, high school, and post office each stand abandoned, monuments to a Great Plains town that never flourished. But for nearly twenty years, they had a zoo, seven acres that rose from local peculiarity to key tourist attraction to devastating tragedy. And it all began with one man's outsize vision. When Dick Haskin's plans to assist primatologist Dian Fossey in Rwanda were cut short by her murder, Dick's devotion to primates didn't die with her. He returned to his hometown with Reuben, an adolescent chimp, in the bed of a pickup truck and transformed a trailer home into the Midwest Primate Center. As the tourist trade multiplied, so did the inhabitants of what would become Zoo Nebraska, the unlikeliest boon to Royal's economy in generations and, eventually, the source of a power struggle that would lead to the tragic implosion of Dick Haskin's dream.

Book excerpt: The Oklahoma City Zoo began when a single deer was donated to a neighborhood park. Because deer were rare in 1902, crowds flocked to see the creature. Soon other people in Oklahoma Territory began donating native animals such as bears, golden eagles, and wolves. By 1903, the little menagerie became known as Wheeler Park Zoo, the first zoo in the Southwest. During its next 50 years, the zoo endured flooding, relocation, and tough economic slumps brought on by wars and the Dust Bowl. The zoo survived, however, because it provided a fun, relaxing place where people could go to escape from daily life. The community, in turn, rallied to help the zoo by donating precious pocket change to buy food and purchase new animals. Children, especially, were responsible for bringing some of the zoo's most memorable animals to Oklahoma City, especially Judy the Elephant. Here lies the story of how a zoo grew up along with its city, largely told with photographs of the animal “personalities” that attracted visitors in the first place.
