Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Zonal-Belt Hypothesis: A New Explanation of the Cause of the Ice Ages The nature of the evidence demonstrates that these belts were potent factors in producing' the climatic changes which marked the various geologic periods. They were the cause of the Ice ages. Primitive man saw the last remnants of these strange sights in the sky, and the echo of his thought in the form of mythology has sounded down through the lapse of the centuries. Facts cannot be ignored. Agassiz demonstrated that the till and boulder deposits scattered over the mantle rock of northern Europe and North America were the product of glacier action, but though the fact of the existence of great continental ice - sheets was established, the cause has remained up to the present date a scientific mystery. Now, in presenting the belted-canopy or zonal-ring hypothesis the cause or causes which brought them into exist ence is of secondary importance. The all-important matter is to establish their actuality. Nevertheless, in order to present the argument in a consecutive form, the author under takes in the opening chapters to show how the belts could have been brought into existence. This portion of the work, however, may be considered as merely tentative, and if he has failed in this particular, it in nowise compromises the main issue. This is worrying since the planet’s life systems are involved and dependent on its functioning. Current climate change – global w arming – is one recognised consequence of this larger problem. To face this major challenge, we will need the research and advice of many disciplines – Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, and Sociology – and particularly the commitment of wise politicians such as US Senator Al Gore. An important aspect of this global problem that has been researched for several decades is the loss of species and the impoverishment of our ecosystems, and hence their ability to sustain themselves, and more particularly us! Through evolutionary time new species have been generated and some have gone extinct. Such extinction and regeneration are moulded by changes in the earth’s crust, atmosphere, and resultant climate. Some extinctions have been massive, particularly those asso- ated with catastrophic meteoric impacts like the end of the Cretaceous Period 65Mya.

WinXSPRO allows the user to subdivide the channel cross section into multiple sub-sections and has the ability to vary watersurface slopes with discharge to reflect natural conditions. Analysis options include developing stage-discharge relationships, evaluating changes in channel cross-sectional area, and computing sediment transport rates. Resource specialists can use the estimated stream-channel geometry cross section hydraulic characteristics and sediment transport output to assist with channel design and monitoring, instream flow analysis, the restoration of riparian areas, and the placement of instream structures.
