Book The Youth Sports Volunteer Coach Experience

Download or read book The Youth Sports Volunteer Coach Experience written by Alysia J. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inclusion of sport participation during childhood reaches beyond the boundaries of childhood backyards and open streets. For many, youth sports have been considered a right of passage to adolescence with organized youth sports programs being encased in communities for a handful of decades. Within that time, a plethora of research has examined various psychological and social outcomes to participation, including perceived enjoyment of sport participation, self-confidence, and social relationships. In addition, the role and contribution of the coach to such outcomes have been well studied suggesting children of trained coaches are more likely to have higher levels of perceived enjoyment of sport participation, self-confidence, and social skills. Despite the breadth of research in the field, much of the knowledge of physical activity has stemmed from the assumption that higher levels of such psychosocial attributes produce higher levels of participation and daily physical activity via sport play. Unfortunately, few studies have gone so far as to measure physical activity levels of children participating in youth sports. The purpose of this study was to explore physical activity levels and contextual factors of physical activity among children participating in organized youth sport practices, and influence of coaching experience and coaching efficacy on levels of physical activity. Physical activity levels were obtained via Actigraph accelerometer and the OSRAC:YS direct observation system, with the latter also used to collect information on the contextual factors of physical activity during youth sport practices. Adult volunteer coaches completed coaching experience and coaching efficacy questionnaires. Results of the study suggest approximately one-third of practice time is spent in recommended levels of physical activity and 40% in sedentary activity. Practice context and coach behavior were shown to be significantly associated with MVPA. Across all teams, coaches spent a significant proportion of practice time providing general instruction and management of players/activities, which were less likely to be associated with MVPA. Coaching efficacy was not significantly associated with children's MVPA. Lastly, end of the season coaching efficacy scores were significantly related to scores measured earlier in the season.

Book Parent Identity and Youth Sport Volunteerism

Download or read book Parent Identity and Youth Sport Volunteerism written by Randall Joseph Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth sport relies on parents to volunteer for positions at all levels of the organization. Among these volunteer positions, the volunteer-coach is often responsible for the creation and delivery of most services in youth sport. The current scope of youth sport would be unattainable without parents' continuous support; therefore, recruitment and retention of these parent-volunteer-coaches is a critical task for youth sport organizations. Parents, however, do not respond to volunteer service as would be predicted from current volunteer literature (Kim, Chelladurai, & Trail, 2007). Perhaps is the behavior of volunteers in the youth sport setting is due to their identities as parents. The presence of their children in a youth sport setting has always been assumed to be a primary motivator for parents to volunteer as youth sport coaches. This research used narrative analysis (Polkinghorne, 1995), identity theory (Stryker, 1968, 2000) and inductive coding to interpret the experiences of parent-volunteer-coaches in the youth sport setting. The inductive coding analysis yielded two groups of roles available within the youth sport setting: aspirational roles and avoided roles. The narrative analysis yielded seventeen parent stories by identifying the central plot that connected important events to role choices. Five groups of stories--History, Prior Arrangements, Crucible, Right Role, and System--resulted from an examination of the similarities among the plots. Ultimately, the role choices made in response to tension in each plot led to choosing the volunteer-coach role. These results suggest that the experience of youth sport volunteer coaching is not primarily based on a relationship with the organization. These volunteer stories rarely included the organization as the most important influence on their experience; instead, parent volunteer experiences were driven by identities that led to role choices within the parent-child relationship. Role choices were not static throughout the volunteer experience; several parents continued to shift the roles played in response to changes in perceptions of the context. Youth sport organizations that recognize the impact of the parent-child relationship can design volunteer recruitment and retention programs leading to greater satisfaction for parents while at the same time fulfilling the organizational need for dedicated volunteers.

Book Coaching Flag Football

Download or read book Coaching Flag Football written by Jason Richardson and published by J.D. Richardson. This book was released on with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After over two decades of coaching youth sports, Jason is sharing some of the secrets of success. This book will take you from pre-season to post-season, helping you survive and enjoy your volunteer time. Focusing on the reason we are volunteering, our kids, you'll walk into practices and games with more confidence that you are bringing value to their time. Although this is geared toward parents who are fairly new to coaching (or new to coaching flag football) it is also relevant to coaches that were assistants but never head coaches and any coach that may have struggled coaching flag football in the past. There are drills to run during practices and a methodology for easily communicating plays to the kids. That methodology applies to the 5 on 5 that most leagues run, but can expand to other leagues as necessary. It's also flexible enough to take advantage of the flag football plays you can find with a simple Internet search. Jason also focuses on teaching defensive skills like flag pulling techniques and "staying home". We know that you want confidence in your coaching while making sure your child and their teammates are both having fun and improving. The focus of this book is to make sure both you and those players are covered. Expect answers to the following questions: What do I need to focus on in practice? What drills can I run to keep players engaged, active, and improving? How do I teach the players the plays and have them run them during the games? How do I take the millions of plays that are on the Internet and adapt them ? How do I teach my players how to defend? Effectively? What should I be doing before the games, after the games? What should I be saying to the parents? What happens after the last game?
