Book Young People and Community Safety

Download or read book Young People and Community Safety written by Lynda Measor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Effective service provisions for young people are often said to be the key to Community Safety planning yet research frequently shows young people as over-controlled yet under-protected. Taking up this dilemma, this work draws upon a large survey of young people's attitudes towards the opportunities facing them and the communities in which they live. The book explores many aspects of young people's lives that adult society finds so disconcerting or threatening or which agency service providers find so difficult to address. The results of these surveys are contrasted with surveys amongst key agency personnel - social services, education, housing, police and the youth service - developing contrasting perspectives on "young people's needs". These findings are then further contrasted with a survey of adult community reactions, revealing markedly different levels of tolerance and intolerance. Discussion of the research findings is situated within a critical review of existing youth diversion and community safety policy initiatives which, by listening to young people and resisting the "demonization" of the young, attempts to take a fresh look at the contemporary "youth question".

Book Youth Work Process Product and Practice

Download or read book Youth Work Process Product and Practice written by Jon Ord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth Work Process and Practice provides an overview of the central concerns in youth work today, exploring what youth work actually consists in and developing an authentic theoretical framework for practice. This accessible textbook places the role of the curriculum and idea of practice as a process at the centre of youth work. Exploring important aspects of practice – such as empowerment, participation and choice, group work, experiential learning and the importance of relationship building – Jon Ord explains how the idea of curriculum can be used to communicate, legitimate and develop youth worth practice, as well as help to articulate its value and importance. The book includes a detailed and up-to-date analysis of the policy climate, looks at the implications of its focus on measurability and outcomes and discusses the impact of devolution in the UK on youth work practice. It contrasts dominant contemporary perspectives of youth and youth culture and argues that, rather than competing, ‘informal’ and ‘social’ education are twin aspects of an educational practice which must emphasises both individual development and wider social change. Youth Work Process and Practice is an essential read for all students of youth and community work and will also be an important reference for practising youth workers.

Book Moving on from Munro

Download or read book Moving on from Munro written by Blyth, Maggie and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years after the publication of the influential Munro Report (2011) this important publication draws together a range of experts working in the field of child protection to critically examine what impact the reforms have had on multi-agency child protection systems in this country, at both local and national level. With a particular emphasis on early intervention, vulnerable adolescents and effective multi-agency responses to young people at risk, specialists from policy and practice alongside academics in different areas of children’s services consider progress in improving child protection arrangements, in transforming services and the challenges that remain. Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs), the statutory bodies responsible for local scrutiny of child protection arrangements, are now subject to Ofsted inspection and this publication considers the role of LSCBs, how services should respond to the most vulnerable children and what 'good' services look like.

Book Keeping Them Off The Streets

Download or read book Keeping Them Off The Streets written by Tim Caley and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping Them Off The Streets is a remarkable account of over forty years’ experience in the field of youth work. It recounts not just personal experience but also reflects on the policy changes that have accompanied successive governments and new developments in sociological research, their efficacy and implications. It tracks Tim Caley’s career from Sheffield housing estate through the challenges of delivering a successful youth service at a County Level, the world of the Ofsted inspector, and finally a much sought-after private consultant in the youth services field. The book provides a new and original perspective on its subject matter. It combines sound research and intellectual analysis with a personal memoir of the issues facing teenagers, then and now. It is a mixture of policy, personality and practice. Its author writes from the prism of wide personal experience: as a teacher, youth club leader, detached youth worker, County Youth Officer, Ofsted inspector, management consultant and government special adviser. But the book is not an academic study: it fills a gap in the literature between university academic-led policy essays and theories and the many disparate publications on local practice or organisational history. It is hugely readable - using humour, anecdote and characters to illuminate its messages. Its aim is to inspire, challenge and remind its audience of the benefits and continued importance of work with young people. It is thought-provoking, easy-to-read yet written with eloquence and passion throughout.

Book Adult Responses to Popular Music and Intergenerational Relations in Britain c 19551975

Download or read book Adult Responses to Popular Music and Intergenerational Relations in Britain c 19551975 written by Gillian A. M. Mitchell and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Adult Reactions to Popular Music and Inter-generational Relations in Britain, 1955–1975’ challenges stereotypes concerning a post-war ‘generation gap’, exacerbated by rebellion-inducing popular music styles, by demonstrating the considerable variety which frequently characterized adult responses to the music, whilst also highlighting that the impact of the music on inter-generational relations was more complex than is often assumed. [NP] Utilizing extensive primary evidence, from first-person accounts to newspapers, television programmes, surveys and archive collections, the book adopts a thematic approach, identifying three key arenas of British society in which adult responses to popular music, and the impact of such reactions upon relations between generations, seem particularly revealing and significant. The book examines in detail the place of popular music within family life and Christian churches and their engagement with popular music, particularly within youth clubs. It also explores ‘encounters’ between the worlds of traditional Variety entertainment and popular music while providing broader perspectives on this most dynamic and turbulent of periods.

Book Teaching Compassion Humane Education in Early Childhood

Download or read book Teaching Compassion Humane Education in Early Childhood written by Mary Renck Jalongo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to highly publicized incidents of school violence, educators across the United States and in many other nations are seeking effective ways to prevent and modify aggressive and anti-social behaviors in students. One of the major recommendations of the research is that efforts to prevent cruelty need to begin early, during the early childhood years of birth through age eight. The focus of Teaching Compassion: Humane Education in Early Childhood is guiding young children to accept responsibility for and to be kind in their interactions with fellow human beings, animals and the environment. Although humane education is a relatively new concept in the field of early childhood education, professionals in the field are very familiar with many of the related concepts, including: promoting positive interpersonal interactions, teaching children the skills of self-regulation, giving children experience in caring for living things and protecting the environment. This edited volume is an interdisciplinary compendium of professional wisdom gathered from experts in the fields of education, child development, science, psychology, sociology and humane organizations. As the book amply documents, the concept of humane education is powerful, integrative, timely and appropriate in work with young children. Teaching Compassion: Humane Education in Early Childhood shows how it is possible for adults dedicated to the care and education of young children to balance attention to the cognitive and affective realms and, in so doing, to elevate the overall quality of early childhood programs for children, families and communities.

Book Understanding System Change in Child Protection and Welfare

Download or read book Understanding System Change in Child Protection and Welfare written by John Canavan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an account of the experience of a multifaceted system-change programme to strengthen the capacity of Ireland’s statutory child protection and welfare agency in the areas of prevention, early intervention and family support. Many jurisdictions globally are involved in system change processes focused on increasing investment in services that seek to prevent children’s entry into child protection and welfare systems, through early intervention, greater support to families, and an increased emphasis on rights and participation. Based on a four-year in-depth study by a team of University-based researchers, this text adds to the emerging knowledge-base on developing, implementing and evaluating system change in child protection and welfare. Study methodological approaches were wide ranging and involved a number of key stakeholders including children, parents, social workers and social care workers, service managers, agency leaders and policy makers. Since the change process involved an agency-university partnership encompassing design, technical support and evaluation, the book also contributes to understandings of the potential and limits of such partnerships in the child protection and welfare field. Uniquely, the book gives voice to the experience of both agency personnel and academic in the accounts provided. It will be of interest to all scholars, students and practitioners in the areas of child protection and welfare.
