Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Youth of James Whitcomb Riley: Fortune's Way With the Poet From Infancy to Manhood When Cromwell sat to Sir Peter Leley, he said, I desire you will use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not atter me at all; but remark all those roughnesses, pimples, warts, and everything as you see me. This famous injunction Riley quoted to a reporter who sought his opinion on biography. The poet had read it, for the first time, when a youth, in the preface to a rare and much loved set of old books entitled British Painters and Sculptors. To a writer who came to him for a sketch of his life, he said, Don't take sides with con icting opinions about me; don't strive to write me up or down; tell the facts. He went on to talk of Boswell. They have called him a conceited fool, said be, but he was of as much benefit to literature as Johnson himself. He put things down as they were, and for once we have the charming chronicle of a life without the weakness of apology. To the author of this volume, the poet said: There is a Chemistry in Nature that is making the worst good and the best better. To this end a biographer may give scars the treatment distance gives them in the landscape; he may soften or spiritualize them - but never ignore them. In a word, the golden rule was this: speak the truth in love. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maturity of James Whitcomb Riley: Fortune's Way With the Poet in the Prime of Life and After The author's first volume - The Youth of James Whitcomb Riley - according to friendly reviewers, has more than biographic value. It is almost the story of the youth of Indiana, wrote a generous critic, or the story of our great Middle West. Impelled by in herent individualism, the central figure rises from primitive beginnings, and, catching at apparently trivial, haphazard and often serio-comic opportunities, lifts itself in obedience to some secret spring of power within, and emerging at last into a gracious maturity, presents the spectacle of a strong, admirable personal ity, well worth the careful study and whole-hearted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound Studies Reader blends recent work that self-consciously describes itself as ‘sound studies’ along with earlier and lesser-known scholarship on sound from across the humanities and social sciences. The Sound Studies Reader touches on key themes like noise and silence; architecture, acoustics and space; media and reproducibility; listening, voices and disability; culture, community, power and difference; and shifts in the form and meaning of sound across cultures, contexts and centuries. Writers reflect on crucial historical moments, difficult definitions, and competing accounts of the role of sound in culture and everyday life. Across the essays, readers will gain a sense of the range and history of key debates and discussions in sound studies. The collection begins with an introduction to welcome novice readers to the field and acquaint them the main issues in sound studies. Individual section introductions give readers further background on the essays and an extensive up to date bibliography for further reading in sound studies make this an original and accessible guide to the field.
