Book excerpt: The Youngest Girl in the Fifth By Angela Brazil Excerpt "Winnie says I'm variable, and I can look nice when I smile, but I'm afraid no one would trouble to look at me twice. If only I were Lesbia now, or even Beatrice! People talk about the flower of a family--well, I expect I'm the weed, as far as appearances go! I haven't had my fair share in the way of good looks." It certainly seemed hard that Nature, which had been kind to the Gascoynes in that respect, should have dowered her brothers and sisters so liberally, and have left poor Gwen out in the cold. Her bright little face had an attraction all of its own, of which she was quite unconscious, but she was entirely accustomed to stand aside while strangers noticed and admired her younger sister Lesbia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life was a busy round at the Parsonage. Winnie devoted each moment she could spare to the garden and the hen-yard, and Gwen, who at present had a craving for out-of-doors, lent a hand as often as she could. She whistled and sang over her work as she transplanted forget-me-nots, sowed seeds, or tidied up the rockery, and her stalwart arms made the lawn mower fly. "There's some advantage in growing!" she declared, as she trundled away the wheelbarrow full of weeds. "My muscles have hardened since last year. I'll wheel you back up the garden, Martin, if you like. Tumble in!"

Book The Jolliest School of All A School Story

Download or read book The Jolliest School of All A School Story written by Angela Brazil and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Jolliest School of All” is a 1922 novel by English author Angela Brazil. As with all of her novels, it is a charming stand-alone tale of life in a traditional English boarding school presented through the eyes of one of it's lively pupils. A timeless coming-of-age story, this is a volume not to be missed by young girls and lovers of the schoolgirl's fiction genre. Angela Brazil (1868 – 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: “The School in the Forest” (1944), “Three Terms at Uplands” (1945), “The School on the Loch” (1946). Contents include: “The Villa Camellia”, “Hail, Columbia!”, “A Secret Sorority”, “Fairy Godmothers, Limited”, “Among the Olive Groves”, “Lorna's Enemy”, “At Pompeii”, “Reprisals”, “The School Carnival”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.
