Book Elizabeth Buffum Chace and Lillie Chace Wyman

Download or read book Elizabeth Buffum Chace and Lillie Chace Wyman written by Elizabeth C. Stevens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At her death she was hailed as the conscience of Rhode Island: Elizabeth Buffum Chace's life (1806-1899) of public activism spanned sixty years. Having fought to abolish slavery in the years before the Civil War, Chace spearheaded the drive for women's suffrage in Rhode Island in the last decades of the 19th century. She was an associate of radical activists William Lloyd Garrison and Lucy Stone and she advocated for the rights of women and children toiling in her husband's factories. Her daughter--one of ten children--Lillie Chace Wyman (1847-1929), was an activist-writer and published short stories on social issues in Atlantic Monthly and other periodicals. An outspoken advocate of racial equality, Wyman kept the legacy of the radical antislavery movement of her mother's generation alive into the twentieth century. Since neither Chace nor Wyman left behind a collection of personal papers, this mother-daughter biography is the product of Stevens' extensive research into public and private archives to locate documents that illuminate the lives of these two remarkable women. By looking at 19th century American women's history through the lens of this activist pair, Stevens reveals some of the connections between the public and private lives of activists and examines a relationship that was at once nurturing, confining, stifling and enriching.

Book Criminology for Social Work

Download or read book Criminology for Social Work written by David Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-03-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminology for Social Work critically reviews the major strands in criminological theory and research in terms of their implications for social workers in the criminal justice system. While acknowledging the complexity of the links to be made, it argues that they are able to enhance practice by making it more critical and realistic. Individual chapters discuss criminological psychology, the labelling perspective, the concentration of crime and victimisation in particular localities, the contributions of feminist criminology, and the evidence of racism in criminal justice. They also cover the connections between criminology and policy. The conclusion suggests how criminology could be enriched by feminist philosophy and psychology.

Book Diabetes without Drugs

Download or read book Diabetes without Drugs written by Suzy Cohen and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on breakthrough studies, Cohen's program reveals how people with diabetes can reduce their need for prescription medication and minimize the disease's effect on the body. Most doctors consider diabetes a one-way street—once you have it, your only option is to manage the symptoms with a restricted diet, close monitoring of blood sugar, and expensive medications. Pharmacist Suzy Cohen shows that diabetes can be treated instead through safe, natural means, like food and vitamins, rather than strictly relying on prescription drugs. She shifts the focus away from glucose management to a whole body approach, using supplements, minerals, and dietary changes to lose weight, repair cell damage, improve insulin function, and reduce the side effects from prescription drugs, many of which rob nutrients from the body and cause additional symptoms. This 5-step program uses natural alternatives, such as drinking nutrition-packed green drinks, adding vitamin D and anti-inflammatory supplements, increasing fiber intake, and including minerals in the diet to help restore the body's own supply of insulin. Diabetes without Drugs explains how patients can protect their heart, kidneys, eyesight, and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes and shows the impact that the right foods and the right supplements can make in reducing blood sugar levels, aiding weight loss, and restoring vibrant health to everyone with diabetes.

Book Facing Patriarchy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Professor Bob Pease
  • Publisher : Zed Books Ltd.
  • Release : 2019-10-15
  • ISBN : 1786992906
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book Facing Patriarchy written by Professor Bob Pease and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing Patriarchy challenges current thinking about men’s violence against women. Drawing upon radical and intersectional feminist theory and critical masculinity studies, the book locates men’s violence within the structures and processes of patriarchy. Addressing the limitations of current violence prevention policies, Bob Pease argues that a nuanced conceptualisation of patriarchy, that accounts for a variety of patriarchal structures, intersections with other forms of inequality, patriarchal ideologies, men’s peer group relations, men’s sexist practices and the construction of patriarchal subjectivities, is required to understand the links between gender and men’s violence against women. Pease shows that men’s violence against women needs to be understood in the context of other forms of men’s violence, including violence against boys and other men, in the involvement of men in wars and conflicts between nations and men’s ecologically destructive practices which constitute a form of slow violence. With crucial implications for priorities in violence prevention, gender equality promotion and in strategies for engaging men in this work, Facing Patriarchy offers new hope for the elimination of men’s violence. This is an essential book for scholars, practitioners, activists and policy makers involved in violence prevention in national and international contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provocative and intellectually challenging, Gender and Migration critically analyses how gender has been taken up in studies of migration and its theories, practices and effects. Each essay uses feminist frameworks to highlight how more traditional tropes of gender eschew the complexities of gender and migration. In tackling this problem, this collection offers students and researchers of migration a more nuanced understanding of the topic.
