Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Austin Fosdick (September 6, 1842 - August 22, 1915), better known by his nom de plume Harry Castlemon, was a prolific writer of juvenile stories and novels, intended mainly for boys. He was born in Randolph, New York, and received a high school diploma from Central High School in Buffalo, New York. He served in the Union Navy from 1862 to 1865, during the American Civil War, acting as the receiver and superintendent of coal for the Mississippi River Squadron. Fosdick had begun to write as a teenager, and drew on his experiences serving in the Navy in such early novels as Frank on a Gunboat (1864) and Frank on the Lower Mississippi (1867). He soon became the most-read author for boys in the post-Civil War era, the golden age of children's literature.

Book The Young Pretenders

Download or read book The Young Pretenders written by Edith Henrietta Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A children's book whose sophistication, humour and ironies are nowadays appreciated by both children (aged about 9-13) and adults. Babs lives most contentedly in a large house in the country with her grandmother, her nanny and her brother (their parents are in 'Inja'). Then their grandmother dies and they are sent to live in Kensington with their uncle and his wife. Having run wild in the country, spent hours with the gardener and had a great deal to do and to think about, suddenly they are abandoned in a world of artifice and convention and are expected to behave artificially and conventionally. Babs cannot, of course, stop playing, and the central theme of the book is that she has not learned how to dissemble (as opposed to playing 'let's pretend') but must learn how to do so"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fowler: Our Soul Is Escaped Even as a Bird Out of the Snare of the Fowler It was about eleven o'clock on a summer morning when a little man of rather eccentric appearance crossed the moat of Graystoke Castle, and finding a bell hanging outside the quaint old gate-house, pulled it violently. No one answered. He rang once more, and still could not gain admittance. "It is a relief to find that no one is living at high pressure here, he said. I will smoke a cigarette, and wait patiently." He lit a cigarette and leaned against the fence. He was unusually short and slight of stature; thin-drawn lips, clean-shaven face, and double eye-glasses attached to broad black ribbon were his other characteristics. He might equally well have been taken for a young boy or a little old man, until you looked into his face and knew that he could never have been young - that, he was probably born at the age of thirty-six, and had remained there ever since. He threw away the end of his cigarette, and pulled the bell again, this time with undue violence. Then a bolt was drawn, and the old gate swung slowly back, and a woman stepped forward. She seemed vexed at being disturbed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cahokia the Great Native American Metropolis

Download or read book Cahokia the Great Native American Metropolis written by Biloine W. Young and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, indigenous North Americans had already built a vast urban center on the banks of the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today. This is the story of North America's largest archaeological site, told through the lives, personalities, and conflicts of the men and women who excavated and studied it. At its height the metropolis of Cahokia had twenty thousand inhabitants in the city center with another ten thousand in the outskirts. Cahokia was a precisely planned community with a fortified central city and surrounding suburbs. Its entire plan reflected the Cahokian's concept of the cosmos. Its centerpiece, Monk's Mound, ten stories tall, is the largest pre-Columbian structure in North America, with a base circumference larger than that of either the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt or the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico. Nineteenth-century observers maintained that the mounds, too sophisticated for primitive Native American cultures, had to have been created by a superior, non-Indian race, perhaps even by survivors of the lost continent of Atlantis. Melvin Fowler, the "dean" of Cahokia archaeologists, and Biloine Whiting Young tell an engrossing story of the struggle to protect the site from the encroachment of interstate highways and urban sprawl. Now identified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and protected by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, Cahokia serves as a reminder that the indigenous North Americans had a past of complexity and great achievement.

  • ISBN : 9780299125349
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Hellenistic Poetry written by Barbara Hughes Fowler and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accomplished poet and classical scholar, Barbara Hughes Fowler brings Hellenistic poetry to life for the contemporary reader. Her selections engage us with the full range of Hellenistic poetic genres, styles, themes, and moods. The anthology includes Fowler's new translation of the entire Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes, and eight of Theocritus' Idylls, including the beautiful, sensuous description of late summer in Idyll VII and the shrewdly comical description of two young matrons venturing into the noisy streets of Alexandria in Idyll XV. There are translations of four hymns of Callimachus, as well as poems by Aratus, Bion, Herodas, Moschus, Pseudo-Moschus, and a substantial selection from the Greek Anthology. An ideal companion to her recently published book, The Hellenistic Aesthetic, Barbara Fowler's Hellenistic Poetry is both a major contribution to classical studies and an invitation to all interested readers to discover the beauty and richness of Hellenistic poetry.
