Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Pioneers of the North-West "Why don't he come?" and Alice McElroy's fingers glided impatiently over the keys of the piano-forte. She glanced again into the square below. There stood pony, saddled and bridled, pawing the paved court, restlessly awaiting the presence of his young mistress. The morning was superb - a cloudless Minnesota sky of intensest blue; the air dry, balmy, bracing, delicious; the velvet green of the immense prairie prismatic with glistening dewdrops. As the fair-browed maiden skipped to the other side of the fort building, and gazed from the window upon the scene, she drank in its wondrous beauty with a wild delight. Book The Promise of the West

Download or read book The Promise of the West written by Mary Barmeyer O'Brien and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the promise of prosperity and opportunity on the frontier, thousands of men and women traveled west in the mid-1800s to forge a new life. Accompanying them were their children, wide-eyed and excited about the adventures that awaited them as they headed toward the setting sun. Little did they know how treacherous and grueling the trip would be. The toil and danger of overland travel forced parents to depend on their children to assist in their ultimate survival. Girls were called upon to help cook, set up and break camp, and mind younger siblings. Boys were called upon to help drive the wagons, herd the oxen and horses, assist with wagon repairs, and guard the camp at night. Even with their endless chores, many pioneer boys and girls found time to record the details of their journeys in letters and diaries. This collection of short episodes from the lives of these children on the trail offers fresh perspectives on the experience.

Book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home

Download or read book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home written by Phoebe Goodell Judson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoebe Judson was a young bride in 1853 when she and her husband crossed the plains from Ohio to the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory. She was ninety-five when this book was first published in 1925. The years between were spent in “a pioneer’s search for an ideal home” and in living there, when it was finally found at the head of the Nooksack River, almost on the Canadian border. Phoebe Judson’s account of the journey west is based on daily diary entries detailing her fear, excitement, and exhaustion. At the end of the trail, the Judsons encountered hardships aplenty, causing them to abandon a farm and business in Olympia before their arrival in the Nooksack Valley. During the Indian Wars they holed up in a fort at Claquato. In time, Phoebe overcame her fear of the Indians, learned the Chinook language, and won their friendship. All this is told in vivid detail by a woman of great dignity and charm whom readers will long remember. Susan Armitage, professor of history at Washington State University, calls A Pioneer’s Search for an Ideal Home a “classic pioneering account,” important for its woman’s point of view.
