Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul the Peddler: Or the Fortunes of a Young Street Merchant Horatio Alger, Jr., an author who lived among and for boys and himself remained a boy in heart and association till death, was born at Revere, Mass., January 13, 1834. He was the son of a clergyman; was graduated at Harvard College in 1852, and at its Divinity School in 1860; and was pastor of the Unitarian Church at Brewster, Mass., in 1862-66. In the latter year he settled in New York and began drawing public attention to the condition and needs of street boys. He mingled with them, gained their confidence, showed a personal concern in their affairs, and stimulated them to honest and useful living. With his first story he won the hearts of all red-blooded boys everywhere, and of the seventy or more that followed over a million copies were sold during the author's lifetime. In his later life he was in appearance a short, stout, bald-headed man, with cordial manners and whimsical views of things that amused all who met him. He died at Natick, Mass., July 18, 1899. Mr. Alger's stories are as popular now as when first published, because they treat of real live boys who were always up and about - just like the boys found everywhere to-day. They are pure in tone and inspiring in influence, and many reforms in the juvenile life of New York may be traced to them. Among the best known are: Strong and Steady; Strive and Succeed; Try and Trust; Bound to Rise; Risen from, the Ranks; Herbert Carter's Legacy; Brave and Bold; Jack's Ward; Shifting for Himself; Wait and Hope; Paul the Peddler; Phil the Fiddler; Slow and Sure; Julius the Street Boy; Tom the Bootblack; Struggling Upward; Facing the World; The Cash Boy; Making His Way; Tony the Tr& Joe's luck; Do and Dare; Only an Irish Boy; Sink or Swim; A Cousin's Conspiracy; Andy Gordon; Bob Burton; Harry Vane; Hector's Inheritance; Mark Mason's Triumph; Sam's Chance; The Telegraph Boy; The Young Adventurer; The Young Outlaw; The Young Salesman, and Luke Walton. Book The Young Christian Merchant

Download or read book The Young Christian Merchant written by George W. Blake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Christian Merchant: A Memoir Several reasons have led to the publication of this memoir. First: The uniform and consistent piety of the subject, the exhibition of which, it is believed, will refresh and encourage Christians. Second: The great variety of incident which abounded in his life, making, it is thought, an interesting volume for the general reader. Third: Although many interesting memoirs of pious young women have appeared within a few years, the memoirs of pious young men are rare. It is hoped and believed that this example of Chris tian character may have a favorable in uence on young men in business. Young persons, reading the biography of ministers and others who lived surrounded by a religious atmos phere, are apt to say, We expect such persons to be devoted Christians; but how are young men, who go abroad in the world, exposed to all the multiplied temptations of the times, to pass through the fire with their garments unchanged? In the narrative which follows, we see an example of one who encountered all these difficulties, and who was enabled, through grace, to overcome them. As an example, therefore, to those in like circumstances of trial, these pages are submitted, with the hope that they may prove a true incentive to high Christian character. Book The House of a Merchant Prince

Download or read book The House of a Merchant Prince written by William Henry Bishop and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of a Merchant Prince: A Novel of New York It was about four o'clock of a February afternoon. A young girl sat in an open hackney coach amid the most extreme bustle and uproar of New York. She was looking out with interest at the front of one of the great wholesale dry-goods stores situated on that part of Broadway near Canal Street. Some modest traveling trunks were strapped behind the hackney coach. The simple inscription on two zinc tablets attached to iron columns of the front, was "Rodman Harvey & Co." The plate-glass windows presented to the street only the cold shoulders, as it were, of some bolts of the variety of textile fabrics contained within. At this dignified height in trade a petty display is unnecessary. Whoever knew anything of the circumstances knew that Rodman Harvey & Co. was one of the oldest and strongest concerns in the metropolis. Book The Merchant of Antwerp Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Antwerp A single traveler, seated in a corner of the car, appeared not to belong to their company. He was a young man, very handsomely dressed in black, whose appearance denoted, if not wealth, at least great personal care. His fine cloth coat fitted his figure without a crease; his cravat was tied with art, and his glossy gloves covered fingers which heavy work seemed never to have hardened. As he kept his eyes down, and occasionally smiled, some of the gay archers were inclined to amuse themselves at the expense of the young dreamer; but when he raised his head and looked at his traveling companions, his countenance seemed to make a deep impression upon them, and, without knowing why, all appeared to feel a respectful so much they for the unknown. The features of the young man were regular a bright color tinged his cheeks, and his black hair curled luxuriantly round his finely formed head but what particularly impressed the archers was something strange in his large blue eyes, a look full of fire, of pride, and of self-reliance, but at the same time so gentle, so unaffected, so kind, that he inspired every one with confidence and esteem. The archers recommenced singing with new energy, and the young man, buried in thought, had again bowed his head, when the train stopped at the station of Malines. The gay band noisily left the carriage, the whistle sounded, and the train again started on its way. A smile lighted the face of the young man, and ho looked around him as though surprised at his sudden isolation.
