Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.

Download or read book Woman s Medical Guide Classic Reprint written by J. H. Pulte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Medical Guide No one will deny the propriety of giving to woman all the instruction needed for herself and off spring, and as this knowledge has to be presented to her in some way, that which least offends her finer feelings will be considered the best. Woman is naturally timid, and refrains as long as possible from making inquiries and asking advice from male persons about her own health or that of her daugh ters, where the subject is a delicate one. And yet she must seek for information, or else irreparable damage might be done. She fears exposure, if it be only in conversation; her nature instinctively revolts against it. Here it is that a book, contain ing all the information she wants, frequently comes to her as a great relief; she can receive instruction through it, without exposing her needs to the ear of a male person, be he ever so well known to her. This reluctance and fear of exposure is so deeply rooted in females, that they frequently rather seek advice, if absolutely needed, from the physician, who is a stranger to them, than from their own family-physician. How much easier is it to con sult the pages of a book, which written for their especial benefit, will inform them privately about subjects, on which they hesitate to converse in the presence of others. Again, is it not all important that woman, the mother and guardian of our infants and children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Woman s Hand Book of Health

Download or read book Woman s Hand Book of Health written by William H. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Hand-Book of Health: A Guide for the Wife, Mother and Nurse The universal possession of such knowledge would also beget a closer bond of sympathy between the public and the physician for by understanding his toils and anxieties better, they would see how much the true physician sacrifices for them, and learn to appreciate his services as those of their most unselfish friend. On these considerations, adne portion of this work has been given to an account of the symptoms, causes, and treatment, of the maladies peculiar to woman. She has, in such subjects, the deepest personal interests, and a pretty full acquaintance with them is not only of service to her, but would seem to be a right which no mortal should attempt to debar her from eu joying. It is not pretended that this volume gives all the means and modes that are known to the profession for the treatment of such maladies; but the treatment is even more extensive than any woman will attempt to practice, except when compelled by an emergency. The measures directed are sufh cient for all the ordinary, and many of the suddenly severe cases; but in every instance, it is expressly to be understood that no woman is justified in depending upon her own skill in serious and complex stages of disease, if a proper physician can be obtained. Book Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Polit ness

Download or read book Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Polit ness written by Florence Hartley and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1860 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do unto others as you would others should do to you. You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be im polite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us ;a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; the.re can be no true, politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility. Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are delighted to introduce Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium On Religious Life (ISRL 2020). This conference has brought academicians, researchers, developers and practitioners around the world. In collaboration with Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS) and Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Agency for Research, Development and Training of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) convened bi-annual symposium with the following main theme: “Religious Life, Ethics and Human Dignity in the Disruptive Era”. The 3rd ISRL highlighted the role of religion and ethics in the disruptive era that erode human values, civility, and dignity. In the processes of development and technological revolution, religion can play an essential role in providing spiritual, moral, and ethical guidance. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, religion is perceived in two ways: on the one hand, some faith communities have been willfully negligent and become ‘super-spreaders’ of the dangerous virus by defying stay-at-home orders. Yet, on the other hand, religion has also galvanized its adherents to support economically vulnerable and marginalized communities affected by the lockdown and social restrictions. Likewise, in democratization, religion gives society the necessary dynamic thrust to maintain its vibrancy, resiliency, and sustainability. This Symposium is therefore expected to delve into the complexity of how religion, religious values and faith communities confront the contemporary challenges to uphold ethics and human dignity. We strongly believe that ISRL conference provides a good forum for all academicians, researcher, developers and practitioners to discuss all religious Life, ethics and human dignity. We also expect that the future ISRL conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.
