Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' Readings: For Social and Public Entertainment Three volumes of "Public and Parlor Readings" have already been given to the public, and have met a cordial reception. Now comes the demand for something adapted to younger minds. Accordingly this book has been prepared. The range of pieces it contains will be found suitable for young persons from ten to sixteen years of age. Yet, while there is little or nothing here which may not be fully appreciated by the "Young Folks," we feel confident that adults will derive equal pleasure from the use of the pieces in their public and private entertainments. We are gratified to see on every hand indications that reading is more and more appreciated as a graceful and elegant accomplishment, and a source of enjoyment in the social circle and public assembly. It only needs that this growing taste should he properly cultivated to make the art of reading a powerful means of moral and esthetic culture. without losing a whit of its value as a delightful amusement. Book Young Folk s Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young Folk s Handbook Classic Reprint written by After School Club of America and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folk's Handbook The Candle Lighters love to get letters from Uncle Nat, but of course they do not know very much about clubs yet. Nevertheless, they like to belong to something which their older brothers and sisters know about, so we enroll them in The After School Club, and, if they are too small to read, their mothers read Uncle N at's letters to them and tell his stories. The mothers give them the finger-plays and the songs and show them how to play the games and make with their little hands things concerning which Uncle Nat has sent their mothers the directions. The little ones will enjoy the pictures, but most of the stories must be read to them. Different names are given to the little circles that the Candle Lighters belong to from time to time. There is a famous Switch Engine group which has a charming letter-paper of its own and tells the little boys who are interested in locomotives and trains many things about them. There is a similar circle for little girls which shows them how to help in the home and to make things which little girls like to play with. Uncle Nat starts to write to his little friends about switch engines and paper dolls, and almost before they know it the children are teasing their mothers to ask Uncle Nat for more. Book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

Download or read book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind written by Julian Jaynes and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry
