Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Folks' AstronomyThe commendation which the astronomical articles in the Young Folks' Cyclopaedia of Com mon Things have received from parents and teachers has led to the preparation of this little volume, in the hope that it will fill a want long felt in homes and schools. There can be little question of the propriety of early grounding a child in an elementary knowledge of the astro nomical features of the earth on which he lives and of the universe of which it forms a part; yet it is almost impossible to find a text-book in which either the language or the ideas are within an ordinary child's comprehension, most of the books miscalled astronomy primers being fit ted only for those who already possess some knowledge of the science and of its correlated subjects. In the present work the topic is treated in the most elementary way, the child being first taught that the earth is a heavenly body which moves in the heavens in the same way as the moon, and which would look from the moon at night much as the moon looks to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy for Young Folks Astronomy, it has been said, is the oldest and the noblest of the sciences. Yet it is one of the few sciences for which most present-day educators seem to find little, if any, room in their curriculum of study for the young, in spite of its high cultural value. It is, we are told, too abstruse a subject for the youthful student. This is doubtless true of theoretical or mathematical astronomy and the practical astronomy of the navigator, surveyor and engineer, but it is not true of general, descriptive astronomy. There are many different aspects of this many-sided science, and some of the simplest and grandest truths of astronomy can be grasped by the intelligent child of twelve or fourteen years of age. Merely as a branch of nature study the child should have some knowledge of the sun, moon, stars and planets, their motions and their physical features, for they are as truly a part of nature as are the birds, trees and flowers, and the man, woman or child who goes forth beneath the star-lit heavens at night absolutely blind to the wonders and beauties of the universe of which he is a part, loses as much as the one who walks through field or forest with no thought of the beauties of nature that surround him. But I have been able to learn the stars from them very easily. As soon as you find a constellation, write the date on the dotted line under its picture. Then you will know when you have earned your diploma. I hope you will have as good a time as I did, finding the fifteen constella tions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Sky: A Primer of Astronomy for Young Readers Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brinkley's Astronomy I have also endeavoured to substitute new and simpler mathematical demonstrations in many cases where my experience led me to think that the old ones were too cumbrous, and have added a series of questions on the first thirteen chapters which I hope will be found useful to the Students prepar ing for examinations. On the whole, it has been my anxious wish to remodel the work of Bishop Brinkley so as to make it correspond with the present extended knowledge of this science, and at the same time to furnish in it such a text-book as my experience as a teacher shows to be required.
