Book excerpt: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the most influential and authoritative text ever written in the history of the yoga tradition. It is the foundation for all of the various schools, branches, and sects of yoga that appeared after its writing sometime around 200 BC. In my tradition of Kriya Yoga, it is considered the most important philosophical discourse regarding yoga, samkhya, meditation, and enlightenment. The text is divided into four parts or chapters called Padas. The first chapter, Samadhi Pada, is the most definitive and essential, and it is the subject of this book.I have done my utmost to adhere to the original Sanskrit in my translation of Samadhi Pada. I painstakingly read and studied several different translations by famous Sanskrit scholars and used my own discernment to arrive at the most logical and precise English version of Patajali's original teachings. However, no two scholars can agree on the exact translation of many important Sanskrit terms used by Patanjali and I am sure there will be areas of disagreement regarding my own translation and interpretation. This is unavoidable. However, the reader can rest assured that I have spent countless hours contemplating each sutra (verse) in excruciating detail in our ashram here in the powerful and majestic southern Andes Mountains of Chile. The Yoga Sutras is not meant to be read quickly or in one sitting. The reader is invited to read this translation and commentary slowly and methodically. In fact, I highly recommend reading only one or two verses a day. After reading each verse, the reader should sit in the silence and contemplate the deep and profound meaning of each verse until an insight or revelation occurs. This is the proper way to study the sacred scriptures of all spiritual traditions. In this way, the study of sacred scripture becomes a meditative and contemplative practice, rather than a mere intellectual exercise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers translations of the 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali in English, French and Dutch, as well as a commentary from the perspective of a practicing Buddhist. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali is a remarkable short text of about 1200 words, codifying the best yoga practices in 195 Sanskrit aphorisms. Yoga became one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In contrast to Jainism and Buddhism, it always kept close to the 'Vedas'. These crucial scriptures speak of three paths to freedom from ignorance and the suffering it brings: Ritual, Mystical Devotion and Yoga. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali turned Hindu Yoga systematic and close to direct yogic experience. Besides a critique of the eternal substances of seer (the self) and seen (Nature), the commentary also identifies correspondences between Jhāna Yoga and the various types of union (samādhi) mentioned by Patañjali and compares constraint (the application of concentration, contemplation and union) with the Nine Stages of Calm Abiding.

Book excerpt: Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: The Complete Guide with Translations and Commentary Yoga focuses on meditation, pose, breath, and overall control over the mind and body. In this practice comes the road to enlightenment, and understanding of karma and reincarnation, and the explanation of the external mind-images in comparison to the true self and eternal wisdom that connects everything. It is through continued practice and dedication in meditation and the other methods of seeing beyond the external that the sacred text expands spiritual knowledge. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the main sources of inspiration for these practices. This is a new translation and verse-by-verse commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and it aims to simplify the language and make it accessible for audiences both new and old to the subject matter. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are broken up into four books: Book I: On the Contemplation of the Spirit Book II: On the Discipline of the Spirit Book III: On the Divine Power of the Spirit Book IV: On the Freedom of the Spirit Other than verse-by-verse commentary, this translation also provides commentary on a general overview of each of the four books in the Sutras. Piecing together each section, the road to enlightenment and the eternal wisdom of Yoga is explored with focus on the distinction between the external man and the spiritual man. The guidance of practices and dedication is retained without the confusion of Sanskrit and dated translations that rely heavily on the poetics of the verses. Both the literal and the figurative meanings of more complicated verse are expounded upon, and commentary avoids indulgence on the overly-intellectual with preference towards clear and actionable instruction and knowledge.

The theme, if the present interpreter be right, is the great regeneration, the birth of the spiritual from the psychical man: the same theme which Paul so wisely and eloquently set forth in writing to his disciples in Corinth, the theme of all mystics in all lands.

Book excerpt: Composed over two millenniums ago, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali remains the philosophical thread that unites the ancient and current world of yoga. Yet, its many translations are underwhelming, lacking connection to reality and practicality. Innumerable forms and sects of yoga have come and gone in between. Obsessed with gaining special powers over mind and body, yoga’s re-tellers have clouded its history in a mystical mist of fantastic claims. It is human nature to crave powers to radically change our lot in life. These layers of dazzle and glitter have over the centuries led us further away from yoga’s spiritual core. The sutras’ clear, logical, and practical path has been blurred and lost. Radically breaking with this mystical tradition, A. K. Aruna seeks to reclaim for us this fountainhead of yoga by retying the understanding of these sutras to the even more ancient source of spiritual knowledge and yoga—the Upanishads. The Upanishads eschewed limited pursuits in order to seek an ultimate goal that was not time-bound. In this still pure form of the yoga of seeking ultimate, timeless truth, the words of Patanjali become crystal clear and practical. Yoga shines in timeless relevance. A. K. Aruna’s Patanjali Yoga Sutras: A Translation in the Light of Vedanta Scripture has brilliantly refocused the light on the Yoga Sutras. This is a companion, translation only, booklet to the Translation and Commentary version of the text by A. K. Aruna.

Book The Basic Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Download or read book The Basic Yoga Sutras of Patanjali written by Avneet Kumar Singla and published by Avneet Kumar Singla. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of 195 Sanskrit sutras (aphorisms) on the theory and practice of yoga. The Yoga Sutra was compiled sometime between 500 BC and 400 AD by the sage Patanjali in India, who synthesized and organized knowledge of yoga from much older traditions. The yoga Stra of Patañjali was the most translated ancient Indian text in the Middle Ages, having been translated into about forty Indian languages and two non-Indian languages: old Javanese and Arabic. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was in relative darkness and made a comeback in the late 19th century. It was founded in the 19th century due to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, The Theosophical Society and others. It regained importance as a comeback Classic in the 20th century. In the 19th century, history shows that the medieval Indian yoga scene was dominated by the various other texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Vasistha, texts attributed to Yajnavalkya and Hiranyagarbha, as well as literature on hatha yoga, tantric yoga and Pashupata Shaivism yoga and not the Yoga Stra of Patañjali. The yoga tradition considers the Yoga Stra of Patañjali to be one of the fundamental texts of classical Yoga philosophy. The appropriation - and embezzlement-of the Yoga Sutras and their influence on later Systematizations of yoga were, however, questioned by scholars such as David Gordon White, but affirmed by others such as James Mallinson.Modern yoga scholars such as Philipp A. Maas and Mallinson regard the Bhasya commentary on the Sutras as Patanjali's own and the Sutras as his summary of older yoga accounts. The combined document is thus regarded as a single work, the Ptañjalayogastra.
