Book The Yellow Devil and the American Dream

Download or read book The Yellow Devil and the American Dream written by Wolfgang Pauels and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Totalitarian states attempt to filter political information in such a way that, in the main, the population receives exposure only to those sources, materials, and presentations that serve and reinforce the goals and ideals of the state. In eastern and southeastern Europe before 1989, the teaching of the English language proved a delicate yet critical field, since it provided a mediated introduction to the (capitalist) English-speaking world. This study examines the fashion in which EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks represented the United States, in order to ascertain the East Bloc's image of the US. The selection and arrangement of topics is investigated to discuss what kind of knowledge (and judgments) the textbooks attempted to impart. Then, new EFL textbooks appearing after 1989 are examined.

Book Romance and the Yellow Peril

Download or read book Romance and the Yellow Peril written by Gina Marchetti and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood films about Asians and interracial sexuality are the focus of Gina Marchetti's provocative new work. While miscegenation might seem an unlikely theme for Hollywood, Marchetti shows how fantasy-dramas of interracial rape, lynching, tragic love, and model marriage are powerfully evident in American cinema. The author begins with a discussion of D. W. Griffith's Broken Blossoms, then considers later films such as Shanghai Express, Madame Butterfly, and the recurring geisha movies. She also includes some fascinating "forgotten" films that have been overlooked by critics until now. Marchetti brings the theoretical perspective of recent writing on race, ethnicity, and gender to her analyses of film and television and argues persuasively that these media help to perpetuate social and racial inequality in America. Noting how social norms and taboos have been simultaneously set and broken by Hollywood filmmakers, she discusses the "orientalist" tensions underlying the construction of American cultural identity. Her book will be certain to interest readers in film, Asian, women's, and cultural studies.

Now, in Devil May Care, the world's most iconic spy returns in a Cold War story spanning the world's exotic locations. By invitation of the Fleming estate to mark the centenary of his birth, acclaimed novelist Sebastian Faulks picks up where Fleming left off, writing a tour de force that will electrify every James Bond fan. A fitting tribute to the Bond tradition, Devil May Care stands on its own as a triumph of witty prose and plenty of double-0 action. "In his house in Jamaica, Ian Fleming used to write a thousand words in the morning, then go snorkeling, have a cocktail, lunch on the terrace, more diving, another thousand words in the late afternoon, then more martinis and glamorous women. In my house in London, I followed this routine exactly, apart from the cocktails, the lunch, and the snorkeling." —Sebastian Faulks
