Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Annual: For the Year of Our Lord, 1922 The Bible is not alone in its testimony to the value of records, but is joined by the evidence of men and the testimony of nature. So far as known, no tribe of savages, no matter how crude in habit, or low in mental power, has ever yet been found that did not in some way keep records; records of travel, of wars, of battles, of victories. And to the Bible, and the testimony of men, comes the facts of nature. In the sandstone can be found a record of the course of the wind, and the drift of the rain for all the centuries that these forces have played upon it. Scratch the green rind of a sapling, or wantonly twist it in the soil, and the mighty oak will tell of the deed in centuries to come. Cut a gash in a man's head, it may heal over, but the record of the deed remains until decompo sitiou shall entirely destroy the body. And we should keep in mind that the record of sin in the soul is as eternal as God himself. Smite a soul, and the scar remains forever; no coffin, nor grave, can con ceal it; no revolution, no not even the upturning of the physical universe, can obliterate it; no fire, not even the eternal furnaces of hell can burn it out; and when the Book shall be opened, and all men called to give an account for the deeds done in the body, then, if not before, shall the value, the significance, and the spiritual aspect of records be known and appreciated. Our last word is statistics. Perhaps this is the really emphatic word of the subject. Just plain, dry statistics. The word becomes very attractive and intensely interesting, when we recall that in our encyclopedias, statistics is classed as a science, and that as early as 1853 a great international statistical congress was held in Brussels and that since that time international statistical con gresses have met in nearly all the great cities of the old world. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to give even a creditable enumeration of the multifarious topics which may be the subject of statistical inquiries. One encyclopedia which I consulted classified as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus

Download or read book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus written by Douglas Sean O'Donnell and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom literature of the Old Testament can be daunting. Sidney Greidanus, in the book's foreword, describes Old Testament wisdom literature as "one of the more difficult genres to interpret and preach." Yet the numerous proverbs and sayings meet us in everyday life, teaching us much about understanding and applying the gospel. Pastor Douglas O'Donnell writes, "Just as every book of the Old Testament adds light to our understanding of Jesus, so the revelation of God in the person of Christ enlightens our understanding of the Old Testament." Not only do the wisdom books teach us about Jesus Christ, but we understand the books better in light of the revelation of God's Son. O'Donnell opens up the genre of wisdom literature through six chapters that look at how the gospel shines through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. He specifically centers on the first and last chapters of each book, noting how the texts illustrate "the wisdom of God in the sufferings of our Savior." Pastors, church leaders, and students of Scripture will find this thoughtful volume demonstrative of seeing the gospel in the Wisdom Literature.

Book 1896 and the Five Redemption Years

Download or read book 1896 and the Five Redemption Years written by William Henry Bishop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1896 and the Five Redemption Years: A Blade O' Grass Christian men, even in these more enlightened times, have been wont to hide behind the letter of the Scripture, and to declare that they are not at fault God, in his infin ite wisdom, has not seen fit to save the world; or sinners, in the hardness of their hearts, have refused to be converted. God has not even inspired his disciples to work more dili gently for the world's salvation. As the inspiration for every good work must come from God, Christian people are not to blame for the unsatisfactory moral condition of man kind. Inferentially and theologically it is God who is at fault. The Christian church goes scot free of blame! The Word of God declares that it has pleased God, through the foolishness of preaching, to save those who believe. If we ignore the less positive teaching of the Scriptures upon this point, and make this text our Bible as far as this one point is concerned, it would seem that preaching is the only duly accredited means of saving the world. At least in apparent fidelity to this idea, the church has magnified the office of the preacher of the gospel until he stands almost alone as the human instrument of salva tion in the modern church. He alone is considered the evangelist of the gospel of Christ, and in every village and hamlet in Civilized countries there has been a pulpit erected for him, and our missionaries also occupy every point of vantage in heathen lands. Surely it would seem that the divine commission had been fulfilled. We have preached the gospel continually and are still preaching, preaching. Preaching; and yet the world is not saved. People will not even come into our churches and sit in the cushioned pews we have provided for them. We have certainly fulfilled the demands of the law, since the gospel is preached every where. What more is needed? Why is the world not saved? The Bible specifically makes faith the basis of salvation, and also teaches that the prayer of faith is duly answered. The church, reading the letter of the law in this respect, also, has established prayer-meeting rooms in connection with every place of worship, and its membership is dili gently exhorted to have greater faith in God, and in his power to save mankind from its sins. We have prayed times without number that the world might be saved, and that the church might receive a greater baptism of the Holy Spirit, and thus be better able to lead men to the Savior, but our prayers have not been answered. We have prayed diligently, and we have also paid for the preaching of the gospel in our churches, but still the world is not saved. What more can be lacking? Book Our Lord Prays for His Own Thoughts on John 17

Download or read book Our Lord Prays for His Own Thoughts on John 17 written by Marcus Rainsford and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS chapter is emphatically the Lord’s prayer. That which we commonly call the Lord’s prayer He taught His disciples, but did not use Himself. The petition, “Forgive us our trespasses,” could never have been uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ. This prayer, on the other hand, is His own—His disciples were not invited to unite in it; it was a prayer they did not and could not utter. Evidently the Lord spake so as to be heard, and the disciples listened. The Holy Ghost has provided that not one petition should be lost to the church of God. We often find our Lord teaching His disciples to pray, and we read of Him spending even whole nights in prayer; but we never find Him praying with His disciples. Indeed, there would seem to be something incongruous in Christ kneeling down with His disciples for prayer; there must always have been something peculiar in His petitions. At this time His work on earth was well-nigh ended: nothing remained for Him but to die: “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do.” (v. 4.) The Last Supper was over. The Lord had dispensed to His disciples the broken bread and poured-out wine, memorials of His dying love; He had expressed to them His desire, that in remembrance of Him, they should often gather together and thus show forth His death in this illustration and their union with Himself and with each other, until His return to them in glory. He had washed their feet; He had comforted them; He had opened His whole heart to them. He now opens it for them to Him before whom “all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid;” and having poured out His soul into the ear, and into the bosom of God, He went forth into Gethsemane. May God the Spirit be with us and give unction and understanding to our hearts, while we meditate on His most precious prayer.

Advent is the season when we are taught to look forward both to the first coming of Our Lord into the world at Christmas-time, and also to His second coming at the end of time to judge the living and the dead. His first coming was to seek and to save that which was lost. His second coming will be to gather His elect into the celestial paradise, and to trample all His enemies under His feet. Shall I on that day be regarded by Him as a friend or as an enemy? Is my present life one of devotion to Him and union with Him, or one of selfishness, pride, impatience of the yoke of Christ?
